So Leila and I went to a park to do a quick shoot using a backlight to illuminate her hair. I had a 285HV as low as I could turn it (I think 1/16 by 1/16) directly behind her and an SB-28 shot into a silver reflective umbrella to camera left. We were just having fun, firing off a few shots, and the best shots seemed to be with her hair moving around more. We were aiming for shots like #1, but quickly found that the SB-28 just couldn't keep up with the 285HV, and that its recycle time didn't allow such rapid shots. That led to a few shots (accidental) like #2. What a fun lesson :)

I don't like #1 very much but #2 is kind of cool and interesting.

Thanks for the comments :) I really liked #2 also... even though it was unplanned at first, we definitely played with it for a while afterward...

Here's a quick edit of the first one. I like it better... The background was crap before!

And just a couple more without the front light. I think the best was the first.

Thanks :)

Can you take your ABs outside without something like a Zeus? Can they be fired by PW/PC? I've been interested in stepping up a little eventually, but I don't know anything about AB units...

One quick note. We shot these in a park after dark, that closed at dusk. The police came about five minutes into the shoot to investigate, probably expecting to find drug use or something. I was very polite to them, and walked up to their car quickly after they got there to talk to them. They asked what was going on, and I showed them the setup and explained why we were in a dark part of a dark park. They actually talked among themselves for a minute trying to recommend somewhere else to go, and ultimately just said that since we weren't hurting anyone we could keep shooting there. Lesson #2: politeness goes far :)
