Disclaimer: First of all, before you all flame me, I know this lens isn't going to give amazing quality , it's not going to auto focus, all that jazz :). I'm not recommending you drop everything and go try to find one of these. It's just for fun. :)

So my wife calls and is like "can I go to a party" i'm like sure...this means i'll hafta go do the shopping, so I head out. Gotta go to the grocery store, but hey...it happens to be right by a Salvation Army. Since it's just me and I'm bored I figure I'll mozey in and see if there is anything interesting. I find, oddly, a 400mm F5.6 Vivitar lens. I wasn't sure what the mount was, but it said "TX" on the back so was assuming that would be it. Whatever, might be able to have some fun with it. It looks like it's in great condition, just some paint scratches. No mold or anything and the glass isn't scratched. He rings it up, it's $7.00. I can't say no to that ^_^.

So I get it home and try to find more info on the lens. Turns out, there are a bunch of different versions. I figure out via the serial number that I got lucky and the one I have is made by Tokina and is actually quite nice.

Now the question is, I wonder if I'll be able to get it onto my camera (an xsi). I look at it and think I might be able to buy an adapter (or whatever) or buy an adapter for a different mount and solder it on or something. I decide to play with it. I grab some screwdrivers and unscrew a few things and get the TX (which I guess is kind of an adapt-all mount made by Vivitar back in the day) mount off of it--in the picture here the TX mount is still on it and the screws and little metal "thingy" are in the container beside it:

I look at this and ha, it just unscrews. It's threaded so.. hmm...I wonder. I have this little $9 extension tube thingy from deal extreme. It's 3 extension tubes with eos mounts on both sides. There is no way it is going to be this easy...I take the one that mounts on the camera:

and it screws on *perfectly*....I 'bout died.

Went out and took a couple pictures, it's extremely windy and rainy out so awful pic, it's kind of blurry was on a tripod but the wind was really jostling things...am happy to say that it does indeed focus to infinity, as well.

Anyway, just sharing my fun story. :)

Wow, that's awesome! I can't believe it was that easy to "adapt" over.

^_^ thanks guys lol...Yeah, I couldn't believe it either. The eos mount was the one from this: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12456 (external link)

I literally about passed out when I realized that it was going to screw right on. The question is, if other old tx mount lenses are so easy to adapt...pretty funny anyway. :P

$7 lens? Heck, you're lucky if you can get a Canon lens cap for $7!

Cool story.

Yeah the TX mount is like the adaptall, the mount can easily be interchanged between systems with the right hardware.

And wow it isn't even a mirror lens. That should perform pretty well. Show us a 100% crop or something :p.

Hehe I'll post a 100% crop tommorow, it's dark out now (over wrote the original with that scaled down version lol)! Check around 5:00pm pacific standard time if you are bored lol. I can tell you this though: that one was shot wide open, it was pretty sharp, but there was some purple fringing...better than I expected though. It was super windy out (i live in troutdale oregon)...i'll try to take a pic here inside and see how it turns out if it'll focus this close actually...

W:shock:W .. What a find.

I need to do a Pawn crawl one of these days. I have this recurring dream where I find a 500 f/4 languishing on a shelf and the Pawn Shop owner begs me to get it out of there for him at a rediculously low price.

Like I said, it's a dream...

What are you, a dope? $7 down the tubes for a piece of crap lens? Vivitar sucks.

(sorry, you kinda expected some flame, so I didn't want to disappoint. What I really meant to say was, "good for you! Now, back to the flaming.....)

I have a $7 lens too. A 135 3.5 in the M42 mount. It's pretty good, but I never use it since I own the 135L, so I'm thinking of removing the glass and turning it into a pen holder.
