Well the Sigma has optical stabilization while the Tamron does not. That would be one key difference. I've seen several comparisons between the Sigma and the Canon 100-400mm but I don't think I've seen many reviews of the Tamron. dpreview.com might have a shoot-out which includes it IIRC.

Yep, The optical stabilization is important, and Sigma has HSM. But Sigma has only 1 year warranty, Tamron with 6 years warranty.

I have not used, nor even seen, the Tamron 200-500mm, but I do own the Sigma 150-500mm.

I'm very happy with this lens and it performs exactly as I expect it to.

The OS is just AWESOME too. It truly is a 4-stop OS since I've been able to get sharp shots at 1/40 shutter speed at 500mm.

Honestly I wouldn't give it a second thought as the Tamron doesn't have OS, but the Sigma does. Plus, the Siggy has more range (small, but more).

I don't see anything the Tamron has over the Sigma that would make me buy it.

It's a great lens, go get it! :D

The big drawback, as stated on the other thread, is the weight. I'm used to carry it now, but it takes some time to get used to it.

Photography is about GEAR and not talent or practice. Practice won't make you a better photographer. Expensive equipment will. =D

I know, I should learn to be more direct. It sucked dead donkey butt. I swapped my 100-400 for a guy's 200-500 for a few wolf shots at Yellowstone last year. My shots of the wolf with the 100-400 handheld, although too far away for a very good photo, were in focus even though he was not very big in the viewfinder. My shots of the wolf with the 200-500 mounted on a monopod at the same distance at the same place and around the same time were totally out of focus.

Not sure where abouts your from (country), but here in Canada, the Sigma 150-500mm comes with a 5 year warranty. Just click on warranty info. after clicking on the link ( http://www.cameracanada.com …roduct.asp?pid=OS150500HC (external link) ).

Hmmm......Oddly enough, the Canadian warranty for this lens is longer than the American warranty (did a quick check on the B&H website). That kinda sucks if you live in the states.

I used to use the Tamron 200-500 for birding, it's in semi-retirement right now. I don't have experience with the Sigma zooms but have also heard very good things about them.

Anyways, here's a sample shot with the Tamron. Taken with a monopod.

It's wierd isn't it?
I was very surprised by my Sigma 150mm Macro coming with a 10 year warranty, much longer than in the States. I can't think of much reason of why they wouldn't be equal.
