I was always told to format my memory cards IN camera, but notice some format in the PC after a download, how do you do yours?

I'm kind of OCD on that score--always start shooting with a clean, formatted card. So a question--does formatting degrade the card any faster? If you format after say 20 shots over and over again, seldom filling it?
