Hi everybody,

I am wondering whether anybody knows for sure if the G1 raw images are actually 8bits or 10bits ?
I explain : I read that, as this is supposed to be raw data from the CCD, it should be 10bits. However, if you look at the .CRW file, especially at the offset where the 'Componentbitdepth' is stored (CIFF specs), it says that this depth is 8bits... As nobody has, to my knowledge, worked out how raw data is encoded, how do we tell 8bits from 10bits (not that it matters so much, I still like the images it takes, but I am wondering...)

I am thinking about writing a java exif decoder, has anybody already done this ? (I am on a mac, can't use the .exe tools...)

Finally, is someone still trying to work out how raw data are encoded, has everybody already found out how but doesn't want to tell in fear of canon's reaction ?

thanks for any reply

J-Yves
