Hello everyone,

My wife just bought me this Hoya Filter CIR-Polarizing to put on my lens, she said it is a good filter to take pictures outside and since I am going to Cuba in 1 week she tought it would be a great filter to have.

My question is this; There is if I read well a top and bottom to this filter and I can see a white line on the side of the filter, how do you know wich side is the right side?

Hope this makes sense to you all!

thanks

It'll only attach to your lens one way. Once it's in place, however, you can rotate the filter to control the effect it has. The white mark is an alignment aid; if you don't have through-the-lens viewing you can hold the filter up to the scene, rotate it until you get the effect you want, note where the white mark is and then mount the filter and set the white mark to the same position. Sounds more complicated than it is. But with the XSi it won't be an issue anyhow since you can see the effect through the lens as you rotate the filter.

I have the same question. you mean on the rim of the filter there is a white line (near where the name of the filter and size is) right? I've only had the filter a couple days and it's been years since I used a CPL. I've tried it at various positions. the only time i've seen a change through the view finder is when that line is at 45 degrees. for example if you look at the lens as if you were taking a picture of your face, that line should be at either 10:00 or 2:00. Not sure if there is a reason for the line or not but that's what I've found just playing around with it.

I'd be curious if anyone else had some more info too. I checked hoya's site but they don't mention it. I was wondering if perhaps that line has something to do with the sun angle. for cpl filters the sun should be at 90 degrees to your lens, but that isn't always possible. Could that line have anything to do with compaensating for that angle? like should that line match up with the sun angle to get the perfect blend?

also impossible to turn the filter with a lens hood on....

You must find a reflective surface with glare, such as a body of water under the sun, or the hood of a car in the sun. You'll have no problem finding which way is up in that situation. The whole idea is to cut glare.

After you align the filter, put the hood back on. It secures behind all the filter elements and will not disturb the polarizing filter's orientation.

The angle is dependent upon the lens' relative angle to the sun, or to the source of the reflections to be eliminated (from water, or leaves, or body of an auto in a photo, etc.)
