Eh...that isn't exactly what I call a "test situation" for the 1D/1Ds III AF problems. Neither body will have an issue with studio shots -- it's mostly tracking subjects in bright sunlight moving at high speed towards or away from the camera that the AF issues arise. And yes, both the 1D and 1Ds were recalled for the latest fix.

Nice shots though.

That was my understanding, that both the 1DIII and 1DSIII were recalled for the fixes. Not that I use tracking much but I would certainly want it to work when I do.

I use my 1Ds M3 for portraits only. Just googled the issue you mentioned; it seems like the recall happened over a year ago. If you purchase a new body today, it should be a non-issue.

I am extremely pleased with my 1Ds M3 and 85mm f/1.2L combination, and having used it for only three weeks, will not consider buying anything but a pro-body in the future (i.e. 1Ds M4)...

That was the first recall.
March 3, 2009 = round 2, both hardware recall and software updates. There is a sticky at the top of the EOS forum about the new recall.

Thanks for the heads up; I did successfully upgrade my firmware last week. However, luckily, I don't any issues with my auto focus; pictures are super sharp. If the AF ever softens up, it will be a great excuse for me to upgrade to 1Ds M4 :-)

That kind of sucks! It means if I buy one I will have to send it in to have the recall done. That's gotta really suck for Canon too.

...or should I opt for the 5D Mk II instead? It is newer and will probably more than suffice for my needs plus I'll save some $.

If the 5DII will work for your needs, don't bother with the 1DSIII.

If you need the superior autofocus, much higher shutter life, and enhanced durability of a 1D series camera, than the 5DII isn't going to do what you want when you need it most.

The 5DII would have worked for many of my works, and at some point, I may very well pick one up as a fun or studio camera, but I wouldn't use it to replace my 1DSIII. Not by a long shot.

Not necessarilly...

I just got a 1DMkIII and according to Canon in Irvine, CA, the serial number falls after the latest round of fixes kicked in. It already has Firmware 1.2.5

So, theoretically, this one should be good right out of the box. At least it would be if the battery weren't stone cold dead.

But that's a separate issue...

If you get the 5D Mark II now, you wont regret it, the price difference can't be justified and you still get a full frame camera with allot of new features. I would rather get the 5D and some L's if I wanted to spend that kind of money... unless you get a used 1DS in good shape and for a good price!?

Batteries are listed as available through forum member "cameralensrentals" in the sell section of our pages. He has an excellent reputation based on what I've read.
