I'm really trying to get some good practice shooting people. I convinced Guy to go out for a shoot on Sunday, and I would really like a bit of criticism on these pictures. Thanks so much!

What I already think: his face is a bit over-exposed in the two color shots. In all of the shots, his face was soft; as a result I oversharpened.

Hey Randy, I am no expert like some others on here, but I will try to tell you what I see. #1 looks ok, I do not think his face is overexposed. #2 and 3 it looks like the focus is off on the face. #3 for some reason to me and the monitor I am on it looks like his right cheek is more in focus than his eyes. Once again I am no expert so take what I say with a grain of salt. Or whatever they say. Thanks for sharing. Don

I definitely appreciate the comments! Completely agreed with the focus being off on #2. As far as the focus on #3, I think I see that too. He has very dark eyes, and I think that if I shoot him again I'll have to use some kind of light to catch there. Otherwise it seems to me that the color and plain quality of his eyes seem to look out of focus almost every time. Of course, it could just be that I never got the focus correct...

Anyway, thanks again :)

Number 3 is the best, and would be a killer if you had focused on his eye rather than his shirt, jacket and cheek. Its not too much out, only a half inch or so.

Number 1 and 2 are a little bit 'snap shot' looking (IMHO). You have cut his feet off on both of them, where you could have quite easily reframed to include all of him, and get rid of dead space above or beside him.
There is also a lack of eye contact. Try to (almost) always get the model to look at the camera, unless their looking out of the frame (or their eyes cant be seen) adds to the shot. For instance a tight crop can look ok if they dont look at the camera, where a shot from a distance doesnt look as natural.

Equipment: Canon 5d mkIII, Canon 24-105L, Canon 100-400L, Canon 70-200L f2.8 mkII, Canon 100mm macro, Canon 85mm f1.8, Canon 430EX Flash.

Thanks you! I see what you mean about cutting him up. Also, I'll make sure to have my subjects look into the lens more.

Here's one more. I cut his fingers off here though... I'm becoming a regular criminal here!
