Just want to know what the best wide angle alternative to the 16-35 II would be? The price tag on that kinda steers me away from it. If that's the best then I'll do it, but I was just wondering if there were any close alternatives!

It shouldn't.

17-40 or a 2nd hand 16-35 mk I. I had the 17-40 before I upgraded that way for $800.

17-40 is a great alternative if you can live with the f4 limit.

Nobody ever takes the Tamron 17-35 F2.8-4 very seriously, but it is a great lens. Matches the 17-40 in most regards (optically, not in build)

But, You said "if it's the best, I'll do it". Well the 16-35 is the best, it just is also priced that way. You can get close, but not quite with the Tamron for 1/5 the price.

10-20/3.5 of Sigma should be good until 12mm when it starts to vignette.

Ditto...I loved that little lens. Kinda mad I sold mine off (had the 17-55IS at the time, so didn't need it.) Might need to look another one up. :)

The one thing that really irritated me about the 16-35 and 17-40 on the 1.3 crop is that it really isn't ULTRA-wide. It's pretty wide, but it really loses out on that super wide perspective that people buy those lenses for.

Have you considered the Tokina 11-16? It can work from around 12mm-16 on your 1D3 and give you some TRULY ULTRA-wide shots that the 16-35 just cannot give you.

And hey, you get 12mm at F/2.8!!!!

These are taken on a 1D mark III with the Tokina 11-16. All shot at F/8.
The difference between 12mm and 16 is huge! Especially if your subject is close.

I also love my tokina. It's a beautiful lens.

If you want the best, the 16-35 is the best. I you don't need the 2,8 aperture then go for the 17-40. If you want wider go for the tokina, it's a thriller!
