Okay, so all of my gear I own is insured against theft, damage, anything. you name it, it's covered. Now, i'm going on a one-in-a-lifetime trip in July and want to get a 500 f/4L IS. Now, what I was wondering is, I can rent this piece of glass and get it insured through the company I rent from. BUT they don't cover theft. Can I purchase some type of insurance that will cover the possible theft on the item? OR would it be better to just buy it, insure it myself, and take the small hit of re-selling it?

Thanks!

most non professional policies do not cover rental equipment. I know my personal article policy specifically does not the same is true with a few other places I checked.

There are a few insurance companies that have policies specifically written for photographers that cover theft but they are more geared towards professional photographers and the insurance price is significantly higher.

So I guess it would be better to buy and resell. Hell the loss from original price might be less than i would pay for a rental.

So the rental place insures it, but not against theft? Keep it with you AT ALL TIMES, and if someone tries to steal it, just drop the lens.....They do cover "accidental droppings" ?

;)

Sounds like a pretty awesome trip! Where to?

Most of the rental insurance states it needs to be in the USA. I'll be in Costa Rica

I'd ask my current insurer whether or not it is covered -- in particular for that amount.

And, the rental company might sell you a theft rider if you asked.

Simple question... who's your insurance through? PPA (for example) would cover this type of thing.
