The Canon off camera shoe cord 3 is around £48 in the UK, thats more than i am prepared to pay for the occasional use i will need it for, so i decided to try my old off camera shoe cord that i used on my EOS film cameras for taking some closeups with my 50D and 580ex, I set the camera to manual and the results were spot on, I presume the 580ex was working in TTL mode, is there any risk to the camera and flash using this old off camera shoe cord?

I think the only difference is the addition of a locking pin on the OC-3. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Only the original Canon Off Camera Shoe Cord had no locking pin.

The OCS-2 includes a locking pin with the screw down mount.

The OC-E3 has a locking pin with a lever lock mount.

All three have identical ETTL functionality.

In addition to the ETTL Off Camera Shoe Cords (version 1, version 2, and version 3)

There is also an older TTL Distributor System that does not work with ETTL.

More Info here:

This system is configured using five multiple flash accessories: (1) TTL Hot Shoe Adapter 3. (2) TTL Distributor, (9) Off camera Shoe Adapter. (4) Connecting Cord 60. (5) Connecting Cord 300. Automatic TTL flash exposure control is possible using up to four Speedlites.

wow i never knew this....

i bought an OC-E3 to get started with off shoe photography... that didnt work out so well. lol... i found holding it at an arms length away while trying to balance a gripped 40D with a 24-70 (back when i had one) to be a hassle so i bought a bracket instead. (CB-Mini rC)
