there's a lens rental guy somewhere in the market place thread that's selling all kinds of boxes. Boxes stacked to the ceiling. Kinda pricey but worth it for those who want them

I've just sent my 1D back to Canon in the original box and was told the box would be marked as an accessory and I'd get it back.

So I did a dumb thing, at least as far as box-keepers go of which I am one.

I sent my 5D in for servicing of the mirror and, thinking it would be most safe in its original packaging, I did just that:oops:

Just in case any of you are as dumb as me, don't send Canon your equipment in the original box--they don't send it back. Oh yes, they package it very well back to you, no fret there. But they don't send you back your box.

Canon is not the only one that does this. I send my Nintendo DS-lite when it just came out to Nintendo to fix a known problem. I sent it in the box.. it came back in a dartboard box.

I was upset .. because I'm a game collector!! I like to keep my stuff nice, clean, and mint.

Ended paying another person for their box/manual/packing material. :(

Wow. just wow.

Anyway--interesting mix of experiences. It does state that they don't assure the same packaging and since most others got theirs back, I'm guessing something might have been misplaced or whatever. They did have it for almost a month and there was some miscommunication about what they were to do with it (other thread on the mirror issue).

I actually just thought it was funny and wanted to share, certainly didn't mean to offend anyone:cry:

That's weird... I've sent several things in several times as I was dealing with a defective body that eventually got replaced... Body, lenses, numerous times...

And always in the original box, and it was always returned in the original box.... I never asked.. it just happened that way. Maybe I got lucky?

What you said couldn't be any less offensive.

Some people just don't have good manners and don't know how to interact with others properly.

Ah good thing I stumbled into this thread. I need to send in my 70-300 and was going to do it yesterday in the original box. Guess I need to not do that. BTW, do I really need the reciept from when 'I' purchased the lens? I bought the camera/lens from someone else and dont have the original reciept.

Not sure. I didn't send a receipt but I did have it registered with serial number plus I sent the email confirmation to send it to them, etc. It sounds to me like MOST of the time, they return the box, but in my case they didn't. Again though, they did package it in a red wrapping very securely and with great care. I think if I send one in again, I would not send the box, but if I did, I would just include a note asking that it be returned, just to be sure.

I was told this once by email, then they corrected it and said send it. Then when they got it they said this again, via phone, and sent me a bill. I then sent another email stating basically what you're saying, "This is their recall and I need to know I can trust it" and they fixed it no charge and sent it back with apologies. I suspect they're getting more of these than they may have anticipated, but that's just a guess.
