Can I do anything to keep the wheels from getting washed out?

You could try to light the car with a shop light or large flashlight hitting that side of it from an angle at camera left. You don't want a whole lot of light, just enough to highlight the wheels. They are bright as can be in my first bracket for the HDR but I don't want them to loose as much luster that they have in the top pic...
