Haha. well that title will get some attention. Yes, today, my 24-70L somehow became unattached from my 5D2 when i was walking wiht it, it fell, back first onto my driveway...no scratches to it! still autofocuses! BUT when zooming in and out, it makes some strange noises around 50mm-35mm.... now, ive tested it and it still works just as it did before, but i have a bit of OCD about the lens. What do you think canon would charge me to fix it? I'm a cps member so i get rush repair and return, but i need some sort of estimate before I commit to working on the repair? anyone have an idea?

thanks

How did the lens detach from the body?

I want to know so I can avoid it. Yikes. I dont even own expensive glass.

Apparently it happens with this lens a lot. something must've depressed it and it turned a bit..it was fine while i was walking around with it minutes before

I haven't dealt with Canon at all in repairing, but don't they usually give you a quote or something like that before they do anything? They'll never fix anything before they confirm it with you from what I've read.

I think you're right. I'm waiting to hear back from professional services to get the rush repair started =]

Of course it depends on exactly what is wrong but you are probably looking at around $200.

A friend of mine dropped his 70-200 and the AF and the zoom stopped working... it cost him around $200 for the repair. My 24-70 is old and I really use it, I mean really use it. It's been across the Grand Canyon, in caves, etc. So needless to say it battle hardened. Well lately the zoom had been sticking on it. As in it was basically more like a 35 - 50 zoom as it would not zoom all the way to the ends. So I took it in about three weeks ago and just recently got it back.... the bill.... $200.

As a side note, I've dropped my 70-200 f/2.8 IS onto a concrete parking ramp from waist high about a year ago and it's never given me any trouble, works fine! My friend who dropped his and had to have it repaired dropped it onto grass at less than waist high.

Good luck with your repair.

I dropped mine from a table a year ago. It landed on the rear end cap. AF motor broken. I sent it in and it was repaired & cleaned at a cost of £105.

As long as it's in you might want them to make sure it still in spec for focus, etc. Mine tended to backfocus a lot when I had it so when I put it in I told them to check it out and reset it if needed. It seems better, but I have not used a lot since I just got it back recently.

My 24-70's internals were virtually entirely replaced for $120 (incl tax & return shipping) but it wasn't a dropped-lens repair.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)
