I have been looking to get a mount of my 100-400, and various sources claim different ones fit. I thought it may be of interest/use to others, to compile a list, that once and for all clears it up.

Sources include this web site, other photographic sites, the font of all knowlege (ebay) etc.

From what I can gather Canon do three tripod mounts the A , B and C, either in (B)lack or (W)hite. There is also an adaptor for the B to make it fit smaller lenses

A=66mm dia
EF 80-200mm f/2.8L USM
EF 70-200mm f/4L USM
EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
EF 200mm f/2.8L USM
EF 300mm f/4L
EF 400mm f/5.6L USM

B=78mm
70-200mm f/2.8 USM
70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM

B+adaptor = 72mm
EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM
MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Photo
EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM

C=82mm
Canon EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6L USM
Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM

I also found mention of this one, on one site
A II(W) for 70-200mm f4 usm

If you have any additions or corrections, please post up, and I will edit this post.

450D / 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS / Tamron 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 / 430EX II

I believe there is an A II and a B II which are fully compatible with any lens that uses A or B respectively.

Edit: I think this should probably be combined with one of the lens stickies.

Edit #2: I'm not sure on this, but what about the super-telephoto lenses? I don't think theirs can be removed, but some of the feet can. Are any of them interchangeable?

The 100-400 takes a B adapter, as does the 300 f/4 IS (the IS, not the non-IS which, I think you're right, takes an A). I think the 28-300 (and maybe the predecessor 35-350) is/are it for the C ring. The 300 f/2.8 IS has a completely removable ring which is probably unique.

Both the A and C rings are hinged; the B and the 300 f/2.8 IS rings are bayonet-style.

I'll move this to Lenses, and link it to the EF Lens FAQ. When it's been firmed up, we'll merge it into that thread like the other notes have been.

And for it to be "Definitive" it needs input on Sigma and other third-party brands as well. Anybody?

This has been added via link to the EF Lens faq, however, I thought that the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS and 100-400mm use the same tripod ring?

I know i've been using mine interchangeably for years..

Does this need an edit, or do I need to look closer at my rings when I get home?

I think you have the 100-400mm listed with the wrong ring, I think it ships with the "B" same as the 70-200mm f/2.8s

Indeed the 100-400mm comes with;

That lens comes with the following when purchased new:

• 77mm Snap-On Lens Cap
• Lens Dust Cap E (Rear)
• ET-83C Lens Hood
Tripod Mount Ring B
• Lens Case LZ1324

So I edited the OP and added the 35-350 to the "C" list.

I can chip in with a couple

1. 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro uses a Tripod Ring "D". These are horrifically expensive and an aftermarket ring "A" can be padded with stick-on-cork to suit. It is better to select a ring with a hinge. I've not found an aftermarket equivalent to the Ring D.

2. 70-200 f/2.8L IS MkII uses a Ring B (W) - the "W" refers to white.

... And has already been commented, the 300mm f/4L IS uses a Ring B (W)

Several cameras and more glass than I will admit to.
