Ok I know I am probably being a bit paranoid but after 2 devective copies of different lenses I just want to be sure.

I just recieved a brand new Canon 70-200 f4L today. Looks great however when I rotate the zoom ring it creates a noticeable noise, like 2 parts are rubbing against each other. When I use the focus ring I do not hear anything.

Is this normal? or I am just being way to paranoid for my own good?

hard to say without hearing it. However, mine is silky smooth. No noise no vibration from either ring. Is it functioning properly? How do the pictures look?

I litterally just got it at lunch so I have not had a chance to take any photos. I'm going to the Zoo on Saturday to test it out :)

What a coincidence, I just picked up mine today (non-IS) and went to the zoo. This is my first L and both the focus and zoom ring make a very slight sound when turned. Both about the same noise level which is very low and not noticable unless you listen for it.

Well it depends on the noise...

a lot of lenses will make noise zoomed in and out...

does it sound "bad" it usually makes a soft tsssssst noise as you zoom...

The one I had made some noise, but it sound like all my zooms zooming. There are elements extending and retracting in the 70-200mm just like any zoom except this happens all inside of the lens.

Ok I'm sure its just me being paranoid then. I've just had 2 bad copies of the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 so I'm a little paranoid that even with this being a completely different lens that does not have any reports of issues that I'll get bad copy.

mjm80 how did you like using yours at the zoo?

if you've got a point and shoot you could always take a video of it, and then upload it to tinypic.com...thats what i did when i wasn't sure about the noises that were coming out of my camera when i first bought my 40D...turned out it wasn't right, so i had it replaced
