Hello,

Got a new Sigma 530DG Super flash for my birthday last week, but haven't really got any time to play with it. When I set the flash into ETTL mode, and press the shutter button to focus, the flash keeps zooming, and I can see the "xx mm" on my flash changing. It seems to me something is wrong - or is this normal? The flash itself works perfectly fine.

Secondly, I can't get to activate High Speed Sync on my 50D. When I try to access the custom fuctions (I guess that's where I could find it), it says:

Incompatible flash or flash's power is turned off.

Is my flash okay, or is in fact, something wrong?

Thanks.

Sounds like you might have to send yours in for an update to work properly on the 50D (not zooming in and out all the time):

Check out the Sigma web site. I didn't look today, but I recall it had the serial number range for speedlites that needed updating to work with newer cameras like the 50D.

My Sigma does not keep changing its zoom when mounted on my 40D unless I have a zoom lens on it and I change the zoom of the lens.

One cannot use the flash menu of the 40D body to control the Sigma flash. You have to use the buttons on the Sigma or alternatively you can use the Sigma as an off-body slave and it can be controlled via a master flash (Canon, Sigma, whatever). This probably goes for the 50D as well. So if you put a Canon 580EXII on your camera body, then you can control the Sigma through your camera body's flash menu. Got that? In reality the camera body is controlling the 580EXII on the camera which in turn is controlling the Sigma slave.

Set HSS mode on the flash itself by pressing the correct buttons. I think the LCD will state "FP", but I don't have my Sigma nor the manual handy at the moment.

And a belated Happy Birthday!

It's not compatible with the 50D. I ordered one..did just as your's. Someone on the forum directed me to the Sigma Web site where they appologized for any inconvenience. Wound up sending it back and ordering a 430 EX II which I am very happy with. As was mentioned above I think they will arrange some sort of upgrade so that it will work with the 50D..but what a hassle..wasn't worth it to me.
