Here's the intro': Today was our daughter's karate 少年大会 (shou-nen-tai-kai) which means lots of kids all competing to win some trophies. Naturally, took my camera to catch her kicking ass!!!

BUT, those in charge decided to switch off 1/3 of the lights in an already dark sports arena.

Realising I'd need a 1-series body to get any keepers from the event, I decided to do some lateral-thinking.
"Hmmm, karate needs 1/500s minimum and that's impossible. Need slower subjects..."
Then I spotted some of the sweetest kids a few rows in front. Not perfect pics, but I love the faces of these kids...

So, the aim of this thread is this:
Post shots you hadn't intended taking but are, for whatever reason, pleased with. And, post (if you can recall) what made you stop, before putting your gear away, giving up, and going home?

My daughter just asked me to add this one. Sorry for the additional post, but she's very insistent!

Thanks for the comment JD. Any chance something similar has happened to you? If so, please add, as I'm hoping to help Newbies with their "way of thinking"....and besides, writing about it helps me to think "out of the box", too!

Hi Roger, good to hear from you. Yep, if my daughter wants me to add a picture, I know what's gotta be done. 11 year-old gilrs can be, err, "difficult" when they're told, "no".

Yup! Forget the "woman scorned" BS. Hell really hath no fury like a prepubescent female in a snit! In fact, when one throws a tantrum, the Devil takes notes!

That is both hilarious and makes me want to cry!

Sorry....are we still talking about when my daughter throws a heebie-jeebie?
The only extra gear I need then is an unbreakable box in case she hurls something at me for taking her picture when she's going AWOL!
;)

Hmm, that would be a problem! Though over here, when it's "rainy season" I just carry a giant golfing umbrella.

I would have actually tried a slow shutter speed of around 1/10 or so to capture the movement in the fighting. Could be done very nicely if you are steady.

Nice idea, and I did try that for a few shots. Unfortunately, we were simply too far from the action. My 100-400L wasn't long enough to get in tight enough....my 30D doesn't have enough resolution to crop....etc.

I do have one shot where a lady is doing "chin-tou" while holding two swords, which is kinda cool, it being a black-belt "kata" even without the swords(!), but I can't bring myself to post it due to me being too fussy about my own pictures. But those problems lead me to stop feeling frustrated, look for something else to shoot.....and start this thread.
:D
