Hi all...

As the title states, I would like to get opinions on what the problem is with my 1Dmk2... But first let me say that I shot over 40 images before any problems developed... The glass mounted on the body was a 400 5.6L... Look at the examples below....

IMAGE: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v467/airbutchie/Various%20Images/banding02.jpg

At first I thought that I didn't secure the glass to the body, so I removed the glass and re-locked... I can feel and hear the locking mechanism so I knew it was securly in place... I tooks a few more shots with the results below...

Hmmmm... So decided to switch glass and mount my 70-200 2.8L IS to see if anything changes... I took a few shots and this is what I got...

IMAGE: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v467/airbutchie/Various%20Images/banding05.jpg

By process of elimination, I figured it wasn't either of the glass but the body itself... So I put it away for the rest of the afternoon and used my 5D instead... When I got home later in the afternoon, I took out my 1Dmk2 (which still had the 70-200 2.8L IS mounted) and took one shot to see if anything has changed...

Freakin' eh?! No "banding" whatsoever!!! What the hell?! Now i'm perplexed... Is my shutter assembly starting to falter? Do sensors really get that bad? Is it time to upgrade to a 1Dmk3? Hehhehehhee... Anyhoo... Any information, assistance, and/or guidance on what this "banding" problem could be would be greatly appreciated... Thanks in advance...

Sincerely,
airbutchie

I would agree. Check the shutter. It could be failing on you, and these things do happen.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...............
It's the shutter starting to fail.
As soon as I saw that the first image was @ 1/2500th/sec. I thought that was the problem and guessed that the last would be at a much slower speed - sure enough, 1/25th/sec., that clinched the diagnosis.

How many actuations?

It's the shutter. My shutter was replaced on my 1D MKII about 3 months ago. My photos showed the exact same symtoms. Sent it to Canon and they replaced shutter unit. I think it was $339.

Thanks everyone for your diagnosis... Shutter count, as of the last picture I posted, using Foxbat's actuation count software (thanks Foxbat) is 51,333... Looks like I'll be visiting CPS in Irvine this week... Again, thanks everyone for your input...

Wow, that's crazy. If it is the shutter at least it's a relatively low cost fix ($200 or so). Good luck!

My shutter went out on me and it was the same thing! Sent it to Canon and it ran me $211. Got it back in under 2 weeks.

Only 50k that's strange. My shutter is at 230.000 shots and still working. I expect that he will die every day. :)
