Gull ID (UK) please?

Not sure what this quite large gull is - perhaps it's just winter plumage?

Looks like it might be a Juvenile Herring Gull

Thanks artyman - I did wonder if it was, only we don't tend to get them here (mainly further along the coast) & I rarely spend any time on the seafront to notice them.

Someone was saying on saturday at the reserve at Farlington that we are seeing more Herring Gulls around here these days. I know when I was kid we used to see a lot in the West Country when on holiday.

Farlington marshes isn't very far from here artyman. I used to see Herring gulls at Bognor regis, where the coast is more rock than shingle, and a few around Old Portsmouth (obviously for the fishing boats).
I also saw a lesser black backed gull here at the same time - again, not common to these parts (I think!).

Still a good place for sailing, also an ancient Heronry and home to a nesting colony of little terns, visiting migratory species etc - Guess we're lucky to have so much on the doorstep.
