Thanks guys for all your help. I got my 70-200L 2.8 IS in Friday and my 17-55mm 2.8 IS in today and all I can say is WOW. I think the 17-55 2.8 is the better value all the way around man does this thing take great photos. I will post a couple semi-macros I took soon as I got it out of the box.
I had no idea I would be able to get as close as I can with this 17-55. I went outside to take some test shots and I thought I was going to touch some of the bush branches. That thing has to have like a 12" - 14" macro on it. and the Brokeh is as good as the 70-200L on those close zooms from about a foot away wide open.
In fact every shoot took so far was a keeper (just in IQ the shoots them selves are just test shoots around the house)

Sad to say, Sat I missed more then half my shoots at my nephews Bday party with the 70-200L. I was quiet pised. I think some of it was my drive settings on my 40D. Had it on single shot instead of servo drive on a lot of shoots. I still think that the IS lacks a lot on this lens. :(

I still have one 17-85 4-5.6 IS lens left if anyone want to see any comparisons between these two lenses. I am here to tell you though, there isn't any!!!!!

Stay tuned for some sample shoots.

Now keep in mind, I am niether an outdoors, wildlife/floral, and for sure not a macro, photographer. This is just some shots of couple of bushes around the house, shoot wide open. They are not much to look at but you can see how well the lens does up close and the smooth Brokeh wide open. I was more testing the range of the lens and the DOF. SO please no flaming on composition or the lack of detail.

If anyone wants samples of the same with the 70-200L or a comparison with the 17-85 IS I would be more then glad to show you.

BTW, what looks like purple edges caused by the lens around the leafs on the second image, ISN'T. The leafs really look like that.

Can you post a 100% crop of whatever you focused on?

Yeah, I know, I'm doing some pixel-peeping. I'm new to dSLRs and looking to see if I need to redefine my expectations. :)

Oh by the way -- congrats on the purchase! It's a sweeeet lens.

I like the 17-55 because it allows me to have very high success rates with fun low-light photos such as:

Grats on your new lenses. 90% of my shots come from this lens.

Yes, I wish I had this thing Saturday instead of the 70-200L IS. I just took some really bad shoots with that heavy beast! I am really beginning to wonder if I made a bad choice with that lens.

Now this wasn't centered in the lens so I suspect that IQ isn't perfect. I just got the lens today I haven't done and front or rear focus tests yet.

Found one with a bee, cool. I think I could have fun with a macro lens. I think not bad since I never photoed outside or a flower before.

What makes the 17-55 better than the 24-70 f/2.8 IS USM? I am looking for a good lens for a 5D I want to buy and was not sure if I should go for 17-55 or 24-70. I am mainly interested in Portraits and Travel photography. Maybe a bit of Macro.

The 70-200 F/2.8 IS USM was the other lens I was thinking of getting. I heard that beast is simply amazing. Why were you not satisfied with it? Sometimes you cannot get close enough with a 55mm, or?

Makes me rethink wanting a 24-70 after seeing those shots.

The EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS will not mount on the 5D - this is a lens intended for the xxxD and 20D/30D/40D/50D cameras.

You might want to consider the 24-105 f/4L - it has close focusing capability, and is a very good walk-around lens on a FF camera - it even works well on my 50D.
