I was eating lunch in my van today and I looked across and saw a house in the distance. I was on one hill and the house is on another. I know where this house is so I looked at my map and used the scale to calculate its 6000ft away (1.1 mile). At the bottom of the hills is big highway.

This is the shot (100% crop)

There is no real purpose to doing this but I was wondering how to avoid that rippley effect caused by the heat of the highway.

Get closer and dont shoot something 6000 ft away over a highway.

I dont think there is a way to correct for this you just have to avoid it.

From that distance you'll get heat ripples from the earth, too. No way to prevent it from happening other than to get closer.

I find that if I chew some peppermint gum, take really deep breaths, and blow through a straw .... sometimes I can cool the Earth enough to stop those ripples for a few seconds.

YMMV

It is just a weather phenomenon. It would be like asking how you can get all the snow out of your picture when you take pictures during a snowstorm. It is nearly unavoidable to have distortion at such long distances.

Hey! at least it is an awesome shot for 6000ft. I doubt there is a way to take out the "mirage"(long range shooting term for what you see).

Could you hit something in a window from that range?

The heat may be from the cars. I've shot across a street and gotten results like that, and it was 40F out.
