I just got the SanDisk Extreme FireWire Reader - should be able to cope with the 45MB/s the Extreme IV can do. It's not on USB, but I'd check your PC's connections just in case.

If FireWire is no good, SanDisk also has a much cheaper USB edition, going at 30MB/s.

macbook without firewire? Is it the air?

the Extreme firewire reader is indeed small and blazingly fast compared to anything else. But to get that speed you must have the Extreme IV card also.

* MagSafe power port
* Gigabit Ethernet port
* Two USB 2.0 ports (up to 480 Mbps)
* Mini DisplayPort
* Audio line in
* Audio line out
* Kensington lock slot

and yes, i do have the 16gb Extreme IV card

Well, return it or sell it. What's the good of a Mac without firewire? No daisy chaining of external drives, no real speed on card readers unless you can fine an e-sata and then be able to use it.

Tsk, Tsk, what a waste. ;)

Didn't Apple push the development of firewire?

Yes, I believe they did. It is superior IMO to USB, faster by far.

Strangely enough, the same SanDisk that sells memory cards also sells a USB 2.0 memory card reader. (external link) This unit works just fine, even though it doesn't have the expense or exotic interface that some people prefer.

The smallest, and cheapest, option, assuming you have your camera with you, is to connect it directly to the laptop. Does it come with Apple-compatible software ? I'd reckon it would have to anyway. All you'd have to take with you is the cable :)

I connected my 50D recently to copy some files and it went about as fast as the SanDisk Extreme reader, using the same 20MB/s Extreme III card.

I don't think that the 5d Mk 1 is a USB2.0 device. Firewire is, generationally, better than USB, so Firewire 400 (v1) is not as fast as USB 2, but Firewire 800 is much faster. USB 3 will be on motherboards by the end of the year.

All the EOS models since at least the 20D have been USB 2.o. They haven't been "High Speed USB 2.0" but they've been USB 2.0. The last model I'm sure was USB 1.1 was the D60; I don't know where the 10D fit in there. But a card reader will generally be faster anyhow.
