I'm expecting it to be terrible on a crop, let alone my full frame as well? I use both, would images be acceptable? Desired use is for outdoor sports (rugby, football, rowing etc.)

Current: 5d III | 1Ds3 | 5d II gripped | 40d | 17-40L | 24-105L | 50mm f/1.4 | 100 f/2 | 70-200L f/2.8 | 430EX |

I'd avoid for those uses..

Its not "terrible" i guess but it probubly isnt very good

For rugby, football, rowing and etc, I'd save up and start looking at either a good prime (85 f/1.8, 135 f/2L or 200 f/2.8L) or a good zoom (70-200 f/4L or the 55-250 IS)

I'm on a budget - currently getting rid of a 70-200 f/2.8L because I don't use enough and would prefer the money...

How about the canon 28-200?

Which 100-300mm Canon is best?

For 100-300s, the Sigma 100-300 f4 is a great lens and highly regarded for sports...the Canon 100-300/70-300 lenses should be generally avoided -except- the 70-300 IS which could be OK for sports, but the 70-200 f/4L is better

As for the Canon 28-200, again, not too great...

What did you not like, or why did you not use, the 70-200 f/2.8L?

I haven't got too into it, and also I'd really like IS on an all-round lens (a lot of indoor). I suppose I wasn't happy with the indoor results - otherwise a spectacular lens! I have a 24-105L but that doesn't really do the job outdoors for sports...

Well I see it as you have a couple options

For indoor sports, the 85 f/1.8 is SUPERB, though a bit short sometimes (What about the 24-105 cant get the job done?)

Outdoors, the 200mm f/2.8L has legendary image quality at half the weight, its easy to handhold as well

For zooms, the 70-200 f/4L IS is a good option...bUT generally speed is > IS when it comes to sports

But I have to ask, what made you unhappy with indoor results? With sports it very well could be subject movement and not you causing the issue..maybe show me some examples?

The kind of shots I need require less DOF, I find it too shallow indoors - I'd prefer the few stops leeway that IS would give me...

Just keep in mind IS only cancels out YOUR vibrations, if your subject moves, you still need a fast shutter to avoid blur from them, and that means either a wider aperture or a higher ISO....

the 70-200 f/4L IS is a great lens then if you really want IS over lens speed...it would probubly run you the same or a little more than the 70-200 f/2.8 however...

for less than that stressing IS, the EF-S 55-250 on your crop would be a good option...same 4-stop IS but a little slower and not as good optically..

I really need something for the full-frame as well, the crop is only a backup. I'm going to try either a f/4IS or a 100-400, and see how those feel. Where should I go to try lenses?

Local camera store, but call first, a lot of them wont necessarily have those in stock for you to try...

You could always rent from a lens rentals place, try each out for a week and see what you think
