I'm expecting it to be terrible on a crop, let alone my full frame as well? I use both, would images be acceptable? Desired use is for outdoor sports (rugby, football, rowing etc.)

How about the canon 28-200? Which 100-300mm Canon is best? For 100-300s, the Sigma 100-300 f4 is a great lens and highly regarded for sports...the Canon 100-300/70-300 lenses should be generally avoided -except- the 70-300 IS which could be OK for sports, but the 70-200 f/4L is better Gear, New and Old! What did you not like, or why did you not use, the 70-200 f/2.8L? I haven't got too into it, and also I'd really like IS on an all-round lens (a lot of indoor). I suppose I wasn't happy with the indoor results - otherwise a spectacular lens! I have a 24-105L but that doesn't really do the job outdoors for sports... Mar 24, 2009 16:28 | #7 The kind of shots I need require less DOF, I find it too shallow indoors - I'd prefer the few stops leeway that IS would give me... Current: 5d III | 1Ds3 | 5d II gripped | 40d | 17-40L | 24-105L | 50mm f/1.4 | 100 f/2 | 70-200L f/2.8 | 430EX |

Just keep in mind IS only cancels out YOUR vibrations, if your subject moves, you still need a fast shutter to avoid blur from them, and that means either a wider aperture or a higher ISO.... Mar 24, 2009 16:45 | #9 I really need something for the full-frame as well, the crop is only a backup. I'm going to try either a f/4IS or a 100-400, and see how those feel. Where should I go to try lenses? Current: 5d III | 1Ds3 | 5d II gripped | 40d | 17-40L | 24-105L | 50mm f/1.4 | 100 f/2 | 70-200L f/2.8 | 430EX |

Local camera store, but call first, a lot of them wont necessarily have those in stock for you to try... Gear, New and Old! RAW Club Member
