If you look at the comparison with the XSi, it seems clear that the low noise is achieved by in-camera noise reduction. I'd rather take the XSi image and apply the degree of noise reduction I wanted, rather than what Canon wanted.

Noise reduction can apparently be set to one of 3 or 4 different levels or turned completely off.

Just to clarify...I took the dpreview's pic and cleaned it with Dfine 2.0.

Can you post the one WITHOUT Dfine 2.0 processing...better yet...one without ANY processing?

hmm I don't see that to be honest Graeme. But I will wait for a full review from DP

The clearest example is the crop showing the red fabric - the XSi image shows far more detail than the 500D image. (They even comment on this in the text of the article). It's a relatively easy job to trade detail for low noise, so I'm not sure the images prove much at this point.

This is what I don't understand about Canon and the others involved in the "megapickle" race: In order to keep some sibilance of higher ISO operation with these high-density sensors, massive amounts of in-camera noise reduction must be made, thereby decreasing resolution/sharpness to rather unpleasant levels. On these 1.6x crop cameras, I really feel that they needed to stay around 12-14MP, at least until they truly have a technological breakthrough that allows them to up resolution without the half-a$$ approach of significant in-camera image manipulation.

This is EXACTLY what I've been wanting to replace my XT with. Don't have the need for a bulky 50D or anything like that yet.

I really don't see what anyone can complain about this camera for...

It's great for the price and that's what it comes down to, I might get one as my second camera when they come out.

On paper, it seems like a nice upgrade and the next logical step, in relation, to Canon's strategy, with regards, to the Rebel line.

Just keep in mind, while the 500D does have the same megapickles as the 50D, it's a totally different sensor technology. Old technology, not the new sensor the 50D uses. If you go look at DP's images, or some of the video turning up on YouTube, you can see it's not all that hot. Lacks a lot of detail the 50D's do have.

I used to think the same ... until I saw the recent comparison of a Hungarian magazine of all Canon G-series models ... remember ... going from a small 3 MP sensor on the G1 to a 15 MP sensor of the same size on the G10, increasing max ISO from 400 to 3200 along the way.

Well, the result of the review is that the image quality HAS increased quite a bit, and it is not just a 'useless megapixel race' ...

I can't believe how unbelievably expensive this thing is in the UK. At current exchange rates, it's $1230. To put this into perspective, from the UK's biggest online camera retailer, I could get a brand new 50d for less than I'd pay for a 500d.

It's almost twice the price of the 450d. Just sick.

From http://www.robgalbraith.com …_page.asp?cid=7-9973-9976 (external link) :

If this is sounding a lot like the image sensor in the EOS 50D, that's not a coincidence. The two share a sensor that is nearly identical, and in some early side-by-side testing with a beta Rebel T1i, it appears the image quality is nearly identical too. The only notable specification difference is the number of channels each sensor incorporates for data readout: the 50D has four, while the Rebel T1i has two.
