For what reason? All Ef and EF-s lenses have AF motors in the lens.

Hehe, right.

While the D5000 (stupid name.. too many 00000000s) has a slightly lower price then the Canon, and most of the same features, the Canon as an overall package looks to be a better camera and better value. No battery grip for that small camera is reason enough that I would not buy one.

And I agree Canon needs to change the name of their Rebels. "T1i" is confusing and hard to remember. Even if they call it "Rebel 500D" would be fine..

For guys like us sitting on this forum remembering these names is no big deal right? But I'm sure people buying a 1st DSLR or planning too are confused.

My budget has been limited, so this is a serious solution for me. I want the 5D's video as an option, but can't shell out the $$ for it.
This Rebel, or a 50D/60D with video I can afford to consider for that feature alone.

As I understand it, it is a new line of product all different than the X series, therefore next year about this time we'll be twisting our tongues with a "T2i" named camera. ^_^

They should just do what they really want to do,
Call it the T-800 series and be done with it...

I shoot Canon, but what a joke. If Nikon can put it's pro level 51 point AF system in it's prosumer models, Canon can do it also. I don't think that the D300 and D700 with their 51 point systems are hurting sales of the D3 and D3x. Canon is so far behind the curve here. I would have switched myself if I would not lose so much money in the process. I'm very happy with my two 1D's, but they should put a real AF system in the 50D successor.

I'm getting late to the conversation but still want to pitch my $.02 in... the # of AF points has nothing to do with AF quality, in my humble opinion even on D40 Nikon's AF works most of the time and Canon's is just too iffy, esp. on Rebels. Nikon's auto metering (exposure and contrast) is better and more consistent than Canon's. That's comparing my relative's old and antiquated D40 (that I borrow every now and then) with my XTi and 40D that I also borrowed a couple of times. Nikon's automatic flash exposure beats the heck out of TTL. I am sick of having to play with EC and FEC every time I shoot in different conditions and yet that D40 gets perfectly exposed shots in fully automated mode most of the time. I'm not even getting in the high contrast shots where Nikon gets it right and Canon doesn't. None of this probably matters to the pros/advanced amateurs shooting in manual but it does matter to the rest of us. I have a friend at work with D700 and a relatively large selection of lenses who mainly shoots in Av, relying on auto settings, and doesn't use EC or FEC and almost never does PP (and I am not even sure he knows how to most of it) yet he's got very nice photos under some pretty challenging conditions - and good luck to him if he had a Canon. The metering, flash metering, automatic contrast / WB, and AF accuracy is where Canon got behind Nikon and no amount of added "features" will fix this.

Now, Canon is still ahead in price and selection of lenses, so getting the AI in their camera bodies on par with "the other" should immediately propel them to #1 again.

Sorry for the rant - and this _is_ a very subjective opinion. I surely hope Canon gets on the right path wth T1i. I couldn't care less about movie mode or megapixels, and can live without swivel screen (one feature I find useful) as long as they fixed their metering issues.

CDS: I'd like one of those, with a remote control.

Wish this was available over a year ago when I purchased my XTi! Nice features and all, but my focus now is either a 50D or 5DmkII!

There are a lot of benefits. Macro shots, ground shots, overhead shots, paparazzi shots.
A swivel screen would make many of out shooting experiences more enjoyable.

I'm sure if there was a poll, those who don't want it never tried it. Use it, your hooked.
There will always be those that can wreck kryptonite.
Never use a case for anything, and their gear looks trashed.

Never lend gear to those with CD's barely fit for target practice.
A quick scan is all it took to figure this out.

I guess I will have to make a post of impossible views done with flip screen.
The feature doesn't have to be made across the spectrum, just the DSLR's in this category.

It appears that at least in non-us locations, the 500D will be in stock this coming week not "early may" as promised by Canon.
