And same conditions, 1/8 @ 5.6, 3200iso handheld.

Live view is incredible for macro precise focusing.

"Also the moviemode is interesting. YOU CAN autofocus AND MF during recording AND exposurecompensate... which imo is an killer-feature."

Does this mean that I can use a zoom lens on it like my 70-200 utilising the full range of the zoom or am I stuck to leaving a prime on it during video mode?

I haven't got one yet, but I handled one in the local cam shop today. It's very nice, LCD etc like everyone said is sweet. It also feels lighter than my XTi.

You can use your zoom lenses and you can zoom during video (of course) BUT you may want to stick to manual, not autofocus.

The AF makes noise picked up by the mic. Also, it's a slower contrast-detect AF, and you have to hold down the button on the camera until it's down, which makes the ergos a bit odd (the button to AF is the * button, not the shutter release button), and it's a slower AF than even my digicams (though it's accurate enough). It takes like 2-3 seconds to AF. I think if you just learn which way to turn your lens for focusing, then focusing manually would be better.

That narrow DOF in movie mode is sweee-eeet.

Is the t1i that much better than the xsi? Where does the 40D rank here?
I am considering a new body and can't decide easily. Any advice for someone who wants the best camera for the future?

Think I'll wait for the 40d to have movie mode...

Should I buy a 40D over the 500D? How about the 450D?

Depends if you want the video mode of the T1i, or the magnesium alloy body/larger buffer/faster FPS/larger and brighter viewfinder/better ergonomics/higher shutter life/shorter viewfinder blackout/faster AF/9 cross point AF sensors/ of the 40D.

A camera based store at my local mall today got them. Walked in and asked when they will be getting them and happened that they got a few today.

O M G, that is all i can say.

I actually like the fit in my hand better then the previous models, 400d/450d.
The camera has no lag, it's very sharp and fast working (unlike my xti)
I can't wait to buy one. I was also very pleased with the results i got with the regular 18-55 IS lens attached. amazing camera for the price.

not comparing it to any camera, just speaking of this camera generally I am pleased with it.

is it faster than the XS?

I saw an interview with a canon rep that placed this camera at the 30d range just under the 40d. So no, its not better than a 40d but its close and for the price? Wow, yeah its worth picking up.

You forgot the second dial and 8-way thumb button. Very important features to me anyway.

So, if I understand you, the 40D is way better than the T1i.
Please clarify. While money is very important, I want the camera that is the better value for money long term.
I'm not interested in the movie aspect of the 500D. So in the end, I just want to choose between the cameras that allow for the best manual picture-taking for the long term.
So which wins for value 450D, 500D or 40D?
I believe the prices are $600, $800 and $1,100 right now.

Any last advice will be taken very seriously.
David
