I wasn't aware of that - quite interesting.

So unless I misunderstood an earlier thread, this feature is actually somewhat better than the similar capability in the 5D MkII? I believe somebody said with the latter that you could NOT autofocus during videography.... but maybe I got that part wrong.

.......Also the moviemode is interesting. YOU CAN autofocus AND MF during recording AND exposurecompensate... which imo is an killer-feature........

I have my 500D now for about 3 days. I am very very happy with it. I bought it with a Tamron 18-270. I did put the 18-55 kitlens on it for once... compared the results with the Tamron in the same range... untill now i did not put the kitlens back on the body. For those who are intrested, i posted more images (coint test too) in the lens section. I think this Camera suits a lot of people because not everyone has 4 times the money for a MII... Attached a image i took yesterday, and the crop for detail comparison. (though this was shot with the tamron at 270mm)

Oh yeah, and as for the AF. You can AF during moviemode, but you have to push a button for it. As long as you do that during goog light it is no problem and the lens will refocus. My experience is that the focus during clips i recorded is always good. Just dont push that button in bad lightconditions because the lens will focus around for seconds and that will do no good to your movie...

Thanks for that info Lee - I appeciate it. I also assume you could manually lock in your exposure during movie mode to avoid over/underexposure?

I confess my ignorance regarding how metering functions during video, but your attached images were overexposed since the meter was thrown off by the darker water and tried to compensate, blowing the whites and washing out the black.

(Maybe off-topic) Well that was my impression too. And since i am a beginner.... How can i prevent this effect in the future?

Well, again I've never touched this model but I will speculate that you would do something with your EC - Exposure Compensation control. That is, if you know that your meter is going to be "tricked" to overexpose by about 2-stops, you could dial that in prior to he video segment. As long as you keep on that specific scene then you are in good shape. But as soon as you shift to a lighter or darker FOV, you will have to adjust accordingly.

It's not quite the same with single shot (old fashioned camera) since you are only metering/shooting one frame at a time. Actually, this a dilemma that all videographers/cinematographers face during filming, but they know how to compensate.

So does anyone think that this T1i could be used in place of a mid-high level consumer camcorder? (600-800)

I have a XSI currently and wanted to pick up a Canon Vixia HF10 but this definitely has me tempted... I could save a couple bucks by selling my XSI and picking up the T1i... but I dont know if there would be a huge quality drop off that makes the $ savings a moot point. Ive looked at the sample videos from some of the links posted here and they look good enough.....

I'll want to use the T1i for my son that's on the way, as well as filming things for my church (services, hangouts and diff sports leagues we have like golf, and basketball.) So that has me wondering if the T1i can handle all those different kinds of shooting situations....

hmmmmmm decisions decisions decisions....

anyone who has the T1i currently care to chime in their thoughts?

Thanks!

How large an SD Card will the Ti take?

Memory could be an issue if you are used to lengthy taping sessions. I believe most average camcorders will easily give you 60 minutes of HD now - don't know what the Ti will offer, but again that will depend upon how large a card can be used. Being a "dual purpose" machine it will offer video compromises, and that's not to say they are bad. At some point I may upgrade to the 5D MKII and it will be nice to have video capability, but it won't have the same capabilities of a dedicated camcorder.

I finally got around to taking a test pic using the T1i and 50mm 1.8. This is first time I've been able to take a pic inside my house without a flash popping up from a P&S. I'm very happy with the T1i so far. Although, since it's my first dslr, I really don't have anything to compare it to other than my SX1. And I can safely say the PQ in low light is much better. I'm guessing that the 50 1.8 makes a difference too.

I bought the T1i with the same idea. Now that I've used the video function a couple times, I think I'll still have to buy a dedicated camcorder if I want to take long videos (clips more than a few mins). The quality of the T1i video is great. But the camcorder will be so much easier to use with the quicker AF and Wide/Tele zoom functions. Oh, and the mic on the T1i is not that great either. I'll use the T1i video for quick video clips (10-15 secs) that I will put together in video montages set to music.

BTW, good luck with the new baby. I have one coming too.

Congrats! Its my first so im really stepping into a whole new ballgame.

Thanks for the comments... believe it or not the audio issue is whats really hanging me up and getting me to lean toward a dedicated camcorder. I assume that the audio quality may be on par or slightly better than your typical point and shoot in terms of audio?

Tho the extra money I would "save" could lead me down a road of new glass.... :p

times like this I hate being a gadget-monger....

Well, congrats for both of you! I am very satisfied with the video capabilities and quality of th500d but i agree, a camcorder is easyer to handle (one hand) and will autofocus better. So a hassle free camcorderis the best choice. But take just one picture with any camcorder and the 500d wins......

It is all about the need...but hey I don't blame anyone, I am a gadgetfreak too...

I own a Video production comp, and i was looking for a small back-up that would shoot HD. It was between the T1i and the Vixia series. I've been watching the video samples since it came out, and was debating. I already had an XSI as a camera back-up and thought i could kill 2 birds.. by swapping it with the T1i.. But, none of the videos had impressed me, until today! Here's a video that was shot in 720p with the KIT lens, most likely by 'joe homeowner'. I was impressed by the colors, sharpness, panning(on the swing) and how well the IS worked. The DOF wasn't there, but it is the kit lens. Ordered one today!

That's only maybe the 3rd time I used it in video mode, so it's shaky and focus goes whoey a lot :)

thanks pickle for that... what was that noise when you were trying to focus on the screen... almost sounded like a zipper?

the shakiness i guess you would get from your camcorder too, albeit in a lesser extent i would imagine...
