"Hammer Time!" Don't know why, but that was the thought racing through my head. Awesome shots.

Missed what probably was a pretty rare opportunity last weekend...Wife looked out the window and said there was TWO woodpeckers in the tree in front of our house...sure enough I look and there were TWO MALE Pileated woodpeckers...by the time I got my camera and was raising it to take the shot they flew away :( ...not sure how often 2 males are within a couple of feet in the same tree but as hard as these birds are to come by I figured it was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I missed out on...

anyway...with regards to the original pics posted I was wondering if people would be willing to let me know which would be the best to submit for a photo contest....not sure what contest yet but I do think that one of them is at least worthy of submission...if for nothing else but because of the action of the nest build going on.

No bird does it quite like Woody the Wood Chipper. Outstanding series.

I'm torn between 3 and 4 for a contest entry. Maybe a slight more crop on 4 would be a good possibility.

Shame their nest was lost. The adult male Pileated will chip out several holes in their breeding area to try and please a potential mate. Hopefully they found an alternate nesting site in one of the other holes nearby. It would be worth a look around.

Very nice series Eagle i. I haven't commented on this site in quite a while, but shots like these remind me why potn is special. Thanks!

Also, don't you love the sounds of a Pileated creating a nest or hunting for food? I tend to think to myself, "Is that some crazy person swinging a sledge hammer against a tree?" Oh, it's just a small bird doing what it does best. Amazing little creatures!

Great series. Making those chips fly, isn't he? Often wonder why these guys don't get terrible headaches!

I am leaning towards pic 3 but 4 is one that makes me scratch my head
