Im new to the hobby but have already determined that the popup flash is pretty useless.

I was looking at picking up a speedlite 430 or 580 exII but then stumbled across the Sigma EF-530 on Amazon.

At $213 shipped it's a lot cheaper than either Canon offering. Im sure the build quality is incomparable but since Im have no experience with non popup flashes is this an ok starter flash?

I bought 2 used Sigma EF-500s from here and loved them. Build was pretty good too, except their funky menu if you are used to Canon's menu system.

However, I had to resell them because there was no option for external power, either that or I couldn't find it to use with my existing power packs.

Im coming in with a clean slate, I have no menu preferences. Its hard to find a site with specs that directly compare the Sigma flash to either of the Canons.

Im going to be using the flash on-camera to start with so the inability to power it externally is not currently an issue for me.

I have one and like it a lot although I've never used any of Canon's EX flashes. The flash's menu isn't very user friendly IMO but it'll start to make sense the more you use it.

I found this page helpful for the 530:

Just make sure its not ST version but Super. ST is very limited version, it only have ettl and full power and 1/16. Nothing else is possible with it. While Super version is very similar to canon flashes. I did make a huge mistake buying the ST version and later ended up with 580ex II. It was very good tool until i wanted to get flash off the camera and use something more then all auto on flash.

if you are looking to stay CHEAP, I think the sigma 500dg supers can be picked up for approx. $75. I use one when I need a master for my 430ex off camera, and it works ok. for recreational purpose its fine, but if you want to get serious ( work instead of a hobby), i wouldnt recommend it.

one downside of the sigma 500 vs the 430 ex is that the 430 is much smaller, and made of better quality plastic.

The super 500s are pretty decent. Although having used my friends' 430s and 580s I found the quality of plastic to not affect to quality of images :)

If there was nothing to bounce off of (like in the image outside) with or without a diffuser would produce the same effect.

The diffuser would just waste power.

Enjoy! Lon
