However he was a long way out for the 100-400 so it is heavily cropped and I didn't do to well on the focus either. I've only had this lens a couple of weeks so i'm going to keep going back here to practice but it is one of those shots you really wish you could have got right. I think the 6 Ospreys I saw all fish here every morning so I'm hoping to have a lot more chances.

The second shot is also from this morning.

Wicked,

Your right, it is too bad you never nailed it, I bet it was going fairly fast in that dive.

I can't wait until they come back here so I can attempt to capture such a shot.

Sounds like you will have more opportunity so all is not lost.

Keep on shooting,

Well the second came out well.. tis too bad about the first, but we get the idea and it really show the behavior of the Osprey and the speed at which they dive, so it is good in that respect! :)

It was a fun session to watch, i've watched them around the nests and in flight this was the first time to see them all out fishing. The speed they hit the water at is incredible. Here is another shot also from a long way off of one getting a little greedy, the fish probably weighed more than the bird. He didn't get to hang on to it for very long.

Despite the imperfections, it still is a great shot conveying the speed and power of the bird.

Something very exciting to watch in person...it's amazing how fast they hit the water talons first. You did very well keeping it in the frame.

Amazing you got that, I think it is the sort of shot that you have to be lucky and have everything going for you at the same time.

If you've only been shooting the 1-4 zoom for a couple weeks than I can't wait for what you'll be shooting in the next month!!!

The way I see it....You're on your way!!!

Great job considering the heavy crop and distance but sounds like you had a fantastic time nonetheless!!!!

Good on you!!!

If you don't mind may I ask your EXIF info for that diving shot!!!

And gosh TALONS first!!!!

Must be FASCINATING to see....;)

I think you did very well. I was out today on the James River with my 100-400 trying to get a decent shot of an Osprey and I would have happy with that shot. I have seen them diving at a long distance and to be honest I was wondering if they really dive like that and your shot confirms to me that they do. Nice job!

WoW That is incredible! Nailing would have been nice (and almost impossible I would think) but that shot is just great!

All I can say, and I hope I can say it without getting in trouble, but...

That first shot, Jesus Christ!!! I don't care if you took it in the middle of a blizzard and your lens cap was on, that's a friggin' awesome picture!!!!!!! That's a shot anybody would be extremely happy with, just for the sake of actually seeing such a dive.

Any chance of posting a link to the original shot? I'd love to see how it looked native from the camera.

The only stupid question is the one that goes unasked - Photographers shoot to thrill, not to kill
