I'd be interested in your opinions regarding whether the 50D is worth the extra dough over the 40D. Reading the DPReview articles about both cameras, I suspect it might be a better idea to stick with a 40D, if you can get one at a great price.

And here is the rub - I can get one for a song! Now I just have to decide whether I want to spend money (however little) on a crop sensor camera... :) Just so you know where I'm coming from, I am currently shooting with an EOS 5D and an EOS 1D Mark II N.

i dont own both but i have a 40D & i've used my friend's 50D. i think there is no significant difference in IQ & overall performance. the 50D is just like the 40D but with more bells & whistles.

the 50D is an awesome camera but i'd say go for the 40D since you can get one at a very good deal. the money you'll save can be used for lens purchases.

one bad thing that im sure will happen when you go for the 50D...you'll hate the LCDs of your 5D & 1D.;)

50D higher ISO better start up screen. I was happy with my 40D but felt the 50 had more to offer. I also have a 5D and with a crop body gives you get a good run for your money out of your lens

I use both. Depends on what you shoot and how big you intend to print. If you do a lot of cropping and would like to print big then you should put the extra cash for the more MP.

If you don't crop a lot, don't print more than 8" X 10", don't need the nice VGA screen and your lens are well calibrated then the 40D does a fine job.

My next upgrade is either full frame 5dMKII or the next 1D. No more crops update for me as the 50D has all I want and I don't need nor want video.

Are there any other noticeable differences? Faster AF, better image quality (other than higher resolution), anything like that?

AF is the same, IQ is the same and ISO performance is the same but with more MP. If you don't need more than 10MP, the 40D is fine. I sold another 40D I had to a guy on the FM forum. He got a great camera.

So bottom line, unless you need higher MP, the 40D does the job. I would have bought a 1DmkIII if it had more than 10MP but it doesn't and I can't afford the 1DsmkIII so I'm staying put as I believe the next 1D will have all that I want: Higher MP like the 50D, better AF than xxD serie, updated VGA screen and very nice high ISO performance. In the meantime, I'm keeping my bodies and invest on glass...Bodies come and go. Lenses you can keep a long long time.

I have a 30D, 40D, 50D and 1D3. I have written in a few forums about my thoughts on the 50D, especially vs the 40D, and you can find my most recent ramblings in this thread....

http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=135541 (external link)

More here, including some duplication, but with additional test results....

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=665140

In short, the 50D is a better camera than the 40D. Whether for you, personally, the improvements have meaningful value is down to you, your glass, your shooting conditions and what you do with your images. Only you can determine if the extra cost is worth it - for you. To summarise genuine tangible benefits I gain from the 50D, here they are....

- Ability to use a "real" 3200 ISO. I've had to use 3200 ISO for paid work at a wedding.
- Ability to fine tune AF calibration. I have nine Canon lenses, plus a 1.4X teleconverter. That's 11 sets of glass in total. All bar one or two of the 11 benefit from AF microadjustment.
- For small bird shots my glass is just not long enough. I need to crop, hard, and the 50D gives me more pixels remaining on my subject.
- The high resolution screen and high resolution preview image allow me to confirm focus perfection both before and after taking the shot.
- Altogether there are several features which, added together, allow me to go home with sharper, more detailed shots than I could with the 40D.

It might also be worth reading this short commentary, to dispel some myths about the 50D and whether the resolution benefits are realisable....

In some situations I find the 50D to also be better than the 1D3. You can see my reasoning and further discussion from post #278 onwards in this thread....

I've owned both. After my 40D was stolen and my insurance money came back, I found a used 50D (3 months old) for less than what I paid for the 40D new... so I just went with the 50D. I already have the lenses that I want for the time being.

I haven't seen a huge IQ difference. The calibration makes me love my 50mm. The LCD is nice.

Taking photos with a fancy camera does not make me a photographer.

Hmmm... since I don't shoot small birds often (if at all), I think I will just hold onto my 1D2N, and stop thinking about yet another crop format... :)

Hi,

I have both. Technically my wife has a 40D that I used to use. I bought the 50D just last week as a replacement. Unless you plan on shooting it at 3200 ISO I'd suggest you get a 5DII. There is no noticeable IQ difference from the 40D to the 50D. That means with a 15MP sensor, Canon has a camera that can create high quality images that a 10MP sensor can. Yes, there is some noise at 3200 ISO, but at 1600 ISO it's still excellent.

The extra features that the 50D provides are undeniably amazing. It's a great camera, and I don't regret it one bit.

I've owned both, and there's no way I would trade my 50D for a 40D, even if the deal was sweetened with a couple hundred bucks. The 50D is a superior camera. The first time you buy a L lens and you need to send the camera and lens to Canon for calibration, you'll wish you had bought the 50D. By the time you've done that a couple of times, you would have saved money with the 50D with it's micro-adjustment feature alone.
