Hmmm... since I don't shoot small birds often (if at all), I think I will just hold onto my 1D2N, and stop thinking about yet another crop format... :)

Famous last words! Picked up a 50D this week. Sweet little camera... one that will find a place in my line-up. :)

The 40d is a great camera. The 50d offers more mp's and micro-adjustment along with better lcd screen. To me there's no difference in IQ. However, I'll actually take the Nikon D300 over both of them! To keep myself happy, I just shoot with both systems and get the best of both worlds. It is getting expensive though!!

Canon 50d+Grip, 40d+grip, 20d+grip, Nikon D300+grip, Canon MR-14EX TTL Ring Lite, Sigma EF-500 DG ST Flash, Canon EF 70-200mm F4.0 L USM, Canon EF-S 60mm f2.8 Macro lens, Canon 50mm f1.8 2 Niffty-Fifty, Sigma "Bigma" 50-500mm, Tammy 28-75mm, Sigma 18-50mm f3.5-5.6 DC lens, Tokina 12-24mm f4, Canon 85mm f1.8, Sigma Zoom Telephoto 70-200mm f/2.8 II EX DG APO HSM Macro, Manfrotto #3047 legs & head, Bogen/Manfrotto 676B Monopod, Canon Monopod 100, Slik Pro 340 DX Tripod and a bunch of NIKON stuff...

I sold the 40 and 50D's and went with the D300! It is a FANTASTIC camera. Even with the D300 getting to the end of its life cycle, it still out does the 40 or 50D's in my opinion.

honestly dont get some of the comments:mad:
the 50d is a great camera,,so is the 40d. they are almost the same IMHO with the edge going to the 50d. the ISO issue that everyone is talking about is real but,,really,, i dont think its all that much to fuss about. i have 2 40d's, for me,,there wasnt enough upgrade to justify making the switch. with that being said, if i wanted to get the newest model,, i would not hestiate on a 50d ESPECIALLY IF I WERE USING A 20-30D. its all about what going to work or not work for you and not whats posted on these boards.

one thing the original poster might consider..the adorama 40d refirbs are 690.00 and a 3 yr mack warranty is about 39.00. pretty hard to pass up that bargin right now if your in the market for this type of camera. i agree with some of the other comments. if you really have not tested a 50d and a 40d side by side for your needs,,i would think it would be hard to make a valid comment. both are excellent cameras.

I'm in Australia so Adorama is no good to me by the time I import. That said, this deal offered a brand new 40D for the equivalent of $710 USD, so that is why I said it was a good deal.

Also, I didn't want this to turn into a brand war, or anything like that. As I mentioned in my OP, I already shoot with a 5D, a 1D Mark II N and a collection of Canon L lenses (primes and zooms). I also have a truckload of Elinchrom lighting equipment, both studio and location, so my purchasing decisions might differ from a hobbyist or enthusiast (how I envy some of you guys! :|). While the D300 might be a great camera, I am too invested in the Canon system to start buying other brands, especially if its only a crop sensor camera. Not saying that it will never happen, but right now I have my Canon bases covered. :)

In the end I chose the 50D over the 40D because, IMO, I was getting more long-term value. The extra resolution is welcome for studio shooting, will compliment my 5D nicely, and the 1D2N will keep plugging away at those action shots. See? Best of three worlds! :D

I have and use both the 40D and 50D. The 50D is the superior camera in many respects.

bumping this up because there still seems to be people arguing about upgrades. And the 50d is still getting bashed as having poor IQ. But from what previous 40d owners have to say...this doesnt seem to be the case. Better to get your answers from the horses mouth.

Hope this helps.

I had 3 40D's and now have 2 50D's. You want the 50D.
