SUN. The white mark is due to the fact that one of your shutter blades is now loose and that portion is over exposed. That dark spot is your shutter blade.
And yes mine looked exactly like that.
Canon sent me a quote for 331 USD to repair it. I told them it was a disgrace that a camera rated for 200,000 clicks could not even get a quarter of the way there. They told me " you should send you camera in every 100,000 actuations to have it checked." I told them I would be happy to if they could make a camera that could get to 100,000 actuations because this one bit the dust at 36,000.
They agve me a 20% discount.
So total was 269 USD and I will have a 6 month warranty on my camera .

Good luck and sorry about your shutter.

so half way the dSLR should be checked it. Let's see my 40D is rated at 150K...so at 75K...drop it at canons....:)

They did not specify they just said every 100,000 but I would assume they meant half of the rated shutter life.
The 40D is rated for 150,000? I thought it was 100,000.
Right now I am missing my 40D. I am on the verge of buying one right now as a second body. Despite all the trash that is said about them it out lasted a 1D :D

Midnight rider, I'm going to say something like that to Canon about the shutter. Maybe I can get a discount.

Did you talk to them first before you sent it in or after they have your camera and they gave you the price?

It was once I got the price from them.

Yes, this is the exact type thing that gets companies into legal trouble. A company should never do something like this. If you look at his thread before that his camera has the exact same malfunction and with 50,000 on it. I was tempted to tell canon about this and demand the service for free but I was worried that they would just bill him as well.

Maybe I need to start sending my camera to CA instead of NJ

I'm really surprised they are charging you for this fix considering the really low number of clicks on the shutter. I have read many posts where people got the shutter fixed at no charge. But they may have been Canon Pro Services members. Anyway, hopefully your camera is back in time for your event and good as new.

I sold a 1Dmk2 here last year, was working fine...The guy I sold it to had it a little over a week and the shutter died, I felt really bad and told him to let me know the cost and I'd help cover it....I think it had about 40K clicks and was like 3 years old. Canon did it for free.....
I've had some experience with Canon customer service, in the end, most every time I've dealt with them.... they've made good.

Maybe 1DMk2 cameras get home sick. :)
Matt I would love to get that serial number if you have any way of getting it. I am going to make a formal complaint to Canon. I do not see how they get off charging some and not others for the same issue.

Although I am a little hesitant to do it because I do not want them to end uo charging the people who got the service for free.
To be honest though I do feel like a 1D MK anything should , with great easy and repetition, out last a rebel.

Thanks for for hoping the camera makes it back in time.
I know there are many things that can delay it and I am already asking for a really fast turn around. So I ordered a 40D last night and had it overnighted. It will be here tomorrow. Even though I know the 40D gets knocked around and degraded a lot on here ( and every where else) I know it can hold its on and get great shots.

Unfortunately I deleted the PM's so.....Not sure who I sold it to....Does seem strange that they fixed one at no charge and not another.....Perhaps the guy I sold it to told them he bought it new, maybe it was never registered and yours was? Just a guess....I know if you purchase a body or lens retail they (rightly so I think) treat it differently than if you buy it 2nd hand....

I have talked to someone who directly told them that they did not know the age because it was purchased second hand. Canon still fixed it for free. I guess it all depends on which person at Canon handles the matter. Personally I would have been glad to pay that for the shutter and a warranty. Not to mention that they went over the entire camera as well. Yet it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth to know that they have done the same thing for others for free.
The way I look at it , in all honesty, is I paid 1100 for the camera and 270 to have it looked over, repaired and warrantied. So I could say I paid 1370 for a refurbished 1D MK2. Which in all honesty is still a great deal.

The 1Dmk2 is a stellar performer and I think you are spot on the money....and should in fact, look at it that way...
