I would really like it also had you taken the time to adjust the horizon. Its waaaaay off and just kills what would otherwise be a very nice image.

I didn't see it as being off with respect to horizon. I thought the flag was relatively plumb in the corner. I'm shooting at an angle to the edge of the field. I wouldn't make the bottom of my photo parallel to the grass line at the rear of the photo would I? I'm really not arguing so much as trying to learn.

I see the errors of my ways. I went back and looked at the uncropped version. It is obvious the photo is skewed with respect to the fence. Thanks for pointing that out. Even if it did hurt my feelings.

I think this version is near right, although, it still isn't parallel with the bank an the rear of the photo. What are your thoughts?

Keeping the horizon level is a good rule to follow, but it is ok to break rules at times. Ultimately, as the artist, it is up to you what you are trying to convey. In a way, I like the first photo a little better, even with the slanted horizon. Everything kinda flows in the direction she is kicking the ball. But accept any criticism with a grain of salt - learn the rules and learn when to break them. Everyone has different tastes, there is no right or wrong. Constructive criticism is how we share ideas and learn.

Not trying to hurt any feelings at all, just trying to help. The repost looks very very nice.

Hey give the guy a break, the game was played at Mt. Everest Field! Seriously, I myself didn't even notice the horizon at first, but do agree, it is usually best to have it level, though there will be times when it's warranted to leave it depending on content. Good capture. ---- Tom

I like the second one better, as the background doesn't pop out and yell "TILT" at me. My focus is that much more on the player.

Regarding where to level, I personally level my photos against a known vertical line, as you've done in your repost. I would not level the playing field horizontal in this scenario.

I was really kidding about the hurt feelings. However, I really didn't recognize that it was off. From reading here on POTN, I have learned to try to pay attention to the horizon or more the vertical lines. Some times like in that picture when not shooting straight on with respect to a horizontal surface, I struggle with what is correct. The flag was close to being parallel with the edge of the photo in the original post. If it had not been, I would have most likely cropped it out.

I went back to the original raw photo that includes more of the fence. It was obvious that I was off. I was hoping to find out I was right the first time. But No!

Looking at this on a different monitor, two more suggestions come to mind. I'd bring your reds down slightly (curves) and lift some shadows on her face. Minor things but they'll help.

I may not be "technically" a rookie (I've had my camera for a year and almost a month); but, I don't know how to do very much with curves and shadows. I need to learn.
