Day Seven: Sunday March 29th. a Crest is still predicted at 52', however instead of happening today, it is pushed bak to around thursday of this comming week. temps a little warmer today, and with the higher angle the sun is getting to, the snow is melting although the temperature is below freezing. Up stream in fargo, the water has dropped a bit since yesterday, but is expected to remain high for several days, and with warmer temperatures expected the next few days, it may start to rise again.

Wow! That's amazing and scary. Nice work. Your photos do a much better job of showing what's going on than the news.

Day 8, Monday, March 30th No picture for today, the water I hear is a few inches higher than yesterday. warmer weather has stated the melting process again, but a new cold front is moving in this evening, the same system that dropped 16" on Bismarck in the last 24 hours. fargo is expecting 12", we are expecting about 8". this means that the water is going to stay high for a very long time. several smaller communities from up to the Canadian border down towards fargo are expecting more flooding.

Personal note...

I think that it is part of human nature to want to see how bad things can get. I of course am worried about my friends and community in both grand forks and fargo. but, even as a grand forks resident, there is a part of me that was a little let down yesterday when the river had not rose significantly since the previous day; I mean, I want to see a record, right? if you have come back to this thread a second time, is there a part of you that is waiting for the picture of just the tip of the flood marker to be left above the water?

thanks for all the responses so far. It means a lot to me that other people are seeing my pictures, even if this series isn't really going for the artistic side of photography.
I will post a new picture tomorrow.

Great series Brian.
I like the reference to the monument from previous floods.

Brian ... for me it is what you are doing - capturing in real time (relative) - life as it happens ... and adding your personal involvement.

Be safe and i hope your friends/family are safe also....

Later,
_Mark

Thanks for sharing your pics and information. We are all hoping and praying for all those affected by the floods and that the water will not rise anymore.

Day 9: Tuesday, March 31st

Well rain and snow mostly missed us to the south- only an inch of snow so far with another inch expected. south in Fargo several inches were reported. no good-it will all end up here as water in the end. The water did rise a bit more today, but because of the large number of people that would not stay off the dikes, even with Police present, they have now made going on the dike a $1000 offense. Since i would rather spend that kind of money on a 70-200L, I did not go again today. I am trying to get permission to go tomorrow. we are still several days from the crest, and the flood is now officially the 3rd worst in Grand Forks. North of us in Canada, preperations have begun now that they are expecting the water to rise. they are breaking up all the ice on the river to prevent ice jams and are filling sandbags. here is a picture from the grand forks herald (www.grandforksherald.com (external link)) of the flood marker from today.

Sorry you and your fellows are going through this. But your photographic images really tell the tale. Now I hear you are expecting 35cm of snow? Hope it doesn't make the flood worse.
