I would like opinions from people who own a 50D, I am thinking of selling my 5D to finance the 50D and keep the 1Ds as my main body. The 50D would primarily be used for nature with the 300 2.8 and 2xTC.....what interest me is the focus adjustment and high pixel count, but it the 15MP a restriction when shooting f2.8 - f8?

Don't understand what you mean by above. I don't have 50d but do use 300mm f2.8 IS with my 1dmk2. When shootingw ith 2xTC, I would say shoot at f8.

The 50D and the 300 2.8IS are a fantastic combo, here the high pixel density of the 50D really shines in delivering all the information that is provided by the 300. This allows for fantastic cropping...

I mean is the 15MP restriciting in terms of IQ....defraction and noise etc..?

I use the 50D with a 300mm f 2.8 and a 2X TC quite often and find it to work very well. My best results when using the 2X happen at f8 but f 5.6 works quite well also. I think that diffraction is highly overtalked on camera forums and while I don't deny that it exists the loss of sharpness from stop to stop is minimal and on a lens as sharp as the 300mm f 2.8 not noticeable. If you are careful with your exposure and shoot to the right I don't think you will notice much in the way of noise either, at least I haven't

I agree with you. My shots at F8 are very nice. I haven't extensivly tested this out, but I will try it this weekend.

Yes, it takes one TC (I tested both the 2x and the 1.4x) combos seperately. It does not recognice them combined i.e. two TCs. This holds for both 50D and 5DII. nubu

Both. Do it with the lens alone and do it again with the TC mounted. The camera will know when the TC is being used.

Great thread. I've been considering getting a 50D to compliment my 1D2 for when I know I'll need to crop the image later eg. small birds. The thing that is holding me back is I don't know how my 300 2.8 with 2x TC will hold up against the pixel density of the 50D. I'm more than happy to use it wide open (600 5.6) on the 1D2, but is the 50D going to actually pull any more detail out or will it just exaggerate any abberations?

Cheers guys, I was pretty stunned at the sharpness of the 2x TC used wide open with this lens, of course though it shows up any slight focus problems you have :| Hence the 50D. Just need to sell the 5D now :|
