Hello all, I've been busy and haven't posted much lately. I haven't seen many posts here of Pyrrhuloxia. We see these birds every time we're out in West Texas. Here are a couple shots comparing the male Pyrrhuloxia to a male Cardinal. Thanks for looking. :)

I like the Cardinal shot. His colours go nicely with the rest of the image.

Seems to me the male Pyrrhuloxia looks more like the female Cardinal. Oh, nice shots BTW.

According to All About Birds, it's a close cousin to the northern cardinal and can be distinguished from the famel northern cardinal: "Female Northern Cardinal's body plumage is more brownish than gray, its face is black, and its bill is reddish-orange and somewhat sharp, not yellow or dusky and highly rounded." (and nice shot!!)

Yep, they are closely related Mitch. They are found in the dry southwestern US.

Thanks jgrussell... I thought they were female Cardinals at first but after noticing the slight difference in their calls. I really started to see the difference(plumage, bill, etc..) between the birds.

Great shots! I lived in TX most of life and probably thought that guy was a female cardinal. Live and learn. LOL
