Not a chance Canon ever stops making a 70-200 2.8 IS. The only way they'd discontinue this one is if there's a Mk II version.

And what would be the price of that?

If you go to the original webpage https://www.camerasdirect.com.au …0-200mm-f2.8l-is-usm.html (external link)

They say there's nothing to improve, and from what I read on this forum, they're right...

It's impossible.

I'd say it's probably the most used lens in the world of sports photography.

this is just another example why rumor sites have to be made illegal and shut down. Total stupidity.

Canon discontinuing the 70-200 would be like a man cutting off his own "stuff."

When it comes to electronics they have and will always be improved. That includes lenses.

I can't see how such a thing would stimulate business. People are likely to hold a purchase after something like this comes up. I would. I am.

It won't happen unless an upgrade is coming - in which case used mark I's will be cheaper :-)

They'd be much more likely to discontinue lenses that no one purchases. Even if 70-200 f/2.8L IS sales are down significantly, I'm sure it's still one of the better selling lenses. Down sales of that lens would mean down sales of ALL lenses. (Which I'm sure is true given the economy). There is no way the 70-200 f/2.8L IS is simply discontinued without a replacement. Never going to happen. If they did it, they'd be conceding the camera business to Nikon.

Every news video that shows a news conference going on somewhere and any sporting event shows a bank of these lenses in use. I would say that the 16-35 2.8L and the 70-200 2.8L IS are the two most popular lenses in use by the photo journalist and sports photographers. Oh yes, and event photographers. Oh yes, and by wedding photographers. Etc. etc. etc.
