Guys hold on - before everyone says it's impossible, let's consider what the site says. It says Canon are discontinuing the 70-200 2.8L IS lens but the site also suggests it's to make way for a MkII.

I agree it'd be impossible for Canon to discontinue that product line completely, given it's status (never used one, but have heard so many good things about it), but we can't rule out that a MkII will be released.

I quite don't understand why Canon would choose this lens for an upgrade as others come to mind which I would consider more urgent, but from a sales point of view, if they do replace the current lens for a MkII that has IQ matching the f/4 non-IS version, I'd imagine sales would pick up significantly.

Of course, it could be a prank, but the website would lose credibility fast...

I'm a bit embarassed to admit it, but I actually considered buying from that website just recently...

I think you mean the f/4 IS version...as the IS version is significantly sharper than the non-IS, and is the sharpest 70-200 of the four.

the 70-200 series is the only ones I can think of where Canon offers it with and without IS, and 2 different F-stops
I could see some of that changing...

Or they say something like this to get people to the store for buying it. I must admit, my first reaction was checking my bankaccount :-)

Making it lighter wouldn't hurt. That being said, mine is probably my favorite lens ever.

It would be a cold day in h, e, double hockey sticks before Canon stopped manufacturing a 70-200 2.8L IS. And a big party day over at Nikon and Sony...

If you must know...

Sounds like propaganda to me. Wouldn't worry bout this lens being discontinued.

If they did come out with a mkii version would owners of the mki have much of a reason to upgrade? An upgraded IS and possibly different coatings? :p

But if they bring a MkII out, then every single sports photographer will buy that lens, or am I wrong there?

And people like me would be going even deeper into debt buying all the used mkI lenses that would be hitting the market.

While unlikely, it is possible they are looking to kill off low margin products. Perhaps this is a low EBIT product and research indicates a price increase will not achieve sales justification.

More likely, upgrade or unfounded rumor.
