Just picked up a 1D3! This will be my primary body but still keeping my 40D just in case. Here are my current lenses:

17-40 f/4 - Bought it from the marketplace here on potn - have yet to get it
50 f/1.4
100 f/2.8 macro
28-135 kit lens
70-200 f/4 IS
300 f/4 IS
1.4x tc
2x tc

I think I am covered as far as telephoto's are concerned. I may eventually upgrade to some 2.8 glass though. I sold my 10-22 and kinda wish I didn't but hope the 17-40 won't let me down for WA. The 50 1.4 is a keeper. The 100 macro is a keeper. 28-135 I am trying to sell.
Should my next lens be a 24-70? Maybe a 24-105? Maybe an 85? I'm not too worried about price, just dont want to go in circles to get my lineup to the point where i'm happy (does that point exist?). So if you guys were in this situation, what would your immediate changes/purchases be?

I'd get the 24-70, which would plug all your holes. You could stop there or also get some primes down the road.... 35L/85L/85f1.8/135L, depending which one(s) you'd get more use out of.

You haven't lived until you've tried the 85L :p. Do you really need a 24-XXX zoom? :p :p

get a prime...

you have 17-40 so the question is do you really need 40-70mm lens (24-40 covered in your other lens)

dump the 28-135 and you are good to go. the 17-40L is an excellent walkaround on the 1d3 :D.

I'd get the 300 2.8. Combined with the 1DIII you'll have an incredibly fast-focussing telephoto combo.

I would consider 180mm macro on 1D3. The seosor is bigger than C sensor so 180mm will come in handy. ^^

Hard to say. I liked the 16-35 + 50mm prime on my 1.3 croppers...But now I have an absolutely exquisite copy of the 24-70L and I wouldn't sell it for anything.
I don't see that you have a flash though. Maybe dump the 28-135 for a 580EX II. All your other glass is really fine and should treat you well.

If you love wide angle, the 17-40/1.3 crop combo is gonna disappoint. The tokina 11-16 is the best UWA lens I've found for the 1.3 format. Doesn't work at 11mm but it works at 12mm. 12mm F/2.8? C'mon, you can't get that anywhere else!!

I found the 24-70/24-105 a bit frustrating on the 1.3 crop. 24mm just wasn't wide enough often. It's close, but not enough.

I already have a 580exII. I think i'll get the 24-70 and look into trading up to a 180 macro. Looking back at most of my WA shots, they are around 12mm or 19.2mm with 1.6x factor on 40D. 1D3 equivalent is almost 16mm so I'd say i'm OK with the 17-40.

Get the 500 f4L I.S. You already have every focal length from 17mm to 420mm (at at least f5.6 so AF will still work) covered, so why double up? Go for the gusto!!

I'd get the 85. I love my 24-105mm but you have a lot more lenses that cover most of that range. With the 85 you'll be golden and it's a sweet lens!
