Is there any other hood besides the ET-65III that would fit my Canon 85 1.8? I went to pull my lens with hood reversed out of my bag and grabbed it by the pinch releases and it let go of the lens and almost dropped it to the floor. Its a nice hood and all ,but I'm not crazy about the pinch on release tabs.

I've had the adorama lens hood for this lens and now have a canon with the pinch release. Its a much better lens hood than the 'knock off' is - so much more secure!

Other than a screw in, which I don't like, there is no other way to attach a hood to this lens that I am aware of. I stack my lenses back end up in my bag just for that reason, the 85/1.8

1. I have a $6 collapsible rubber hood that works just fine with it.
2. Don't grab any lens by the hood? ;)

I try to put my lenses in my bag with back end up also ,but it was one of those times i wasn't thinking about it. I do have a problem with numbness in my right hand because of a neck problem and sometimes I can't really feel what I'm touching and didn't know i had my fingers on the tabs of the lens hood. I guess I have to be more careful from now on. Thanks for the replies.

You can only do what you can do. Although not the best solution, a collapsible hood, as mentioned above could be a viable soluton although you would lose the protective properties of a rigid hood not screwed into the filter mount, in cases of bumps or minor drops.

I use this lens totally hoodless. It seems to work ok without one. Haven't noticed any gross flaring. Is it known for bad flare?

Round screw-in hood

A round screw-in (generic brand) hood will work just great with any except wider angle lenses (especially when using 1.6x equipment).

It will prevent flare and will protect the lens from physical damage. I fell with the hood on a 70-200mm f/4L IS lens hitting the concrete. The hood was toast but, the lens was undamaged.

A round screw-in hood also facilitates the use of a CPL. You just turn the whole hood to rotate the front element of the CPL.

These filters (sold by the size indicated on the lens such as 67 for the 70-200mm) are available dirt cheap on eBay.

Although I haven't done any tests, there would be conditions where you might get lower contrast without a hood. I always use hoods.
