.HK so like a lot of gear you see on these new online shops and on ebay, based in Hong Kong.

Usually totally legit ofcourse, but I know atleast to here in the UK you can be hit with a CoD charge of upto 40% of the items value due to import fees, customs charges and tax.

Not sure how that would effect you in the US though.

hmmm...good point, i've actually asked them about shipping to my friend in UK too and they do that, just with a slightly different shipping charge (not that bad actually), but do you think the custom's charges will be a problem if they declare it as gifts? that's how they normally do it, i think...haha...i don't really know actually. thanks for the advise though.

If its declared as a gift, but then gets broken, lost ot stolen you will only be entitled to a very low value in compensation (in the UK its something like £35) and I doubt the supplier would foot the bill themselves.

Also make sure that the items are insured because a lot of the HK based suppliers do not include shipping insurance by default.

But prices in general are often missleading when you're importing goods.

For example, last week I bought a Delta Flip Flash bracket from the US (they dont sell them here in the UK) and it cost $38 (plus an insane $50 shipping), When it arrived on friday I was hit with a £15 import duty which is about 40% of the value of the bracket.

The prices always look very tempting when you compare the listed prices against those from stores based in your own country but if you get hit with the extra fees then the end cost can end up being more than if you had just bought at home, not to mention the added risks involved in long distance transportation, theft, damage etc.
