The 100-400 and 300 f4 IS are easily hand holdable, IS helps a lot. The 400 5.6L needs a faster shutter speed. The 300 2.8 IS is great with TCs for hand holding too. I can hand hold my 500 f4 for brief periods, but I prefer using a tripod on this one. Romy Ocon, Philippine Wild Birds
