But those bodies have been out for years, and the have successor products (the 50D). So it makes sense for these older designs to be for sale, by those seeking to trade up.

The last time I checked the 50D wasn't at the top of the Canon food chain. :) I had a 50D and I wanted a 5D Mark II. I just didn't have to sell it to get the 5D2.

People upgrade all the time, and there are lots of people jumping to FF. Now that the 5DMk2 is out people are snatching up deals on 5D classics. Some folks are probably jumping to Nikon... and others might be going for 1D bodies.

There's not enough difference between the 40D and the 50D to wonder why just as many 50D's are being sold... at least not in my mind.

I saw three in the past 10 pages. All but one were selling lenses with the camera so I dont think its a body issue. Lots of people run out and buy the latest trinket only to find out that it still takes effort and some knowledge to get results. You know the old saying that "The suit doesnt make the man".

Yup, and now that the T1i is out I imagine there's a lot of buyers remorse.

"I can get 15mp for hundreds less? I'm selling that 50D!"

I think this is just another slightly less conspicuous 50D sucks thread. Funny thing is, if you check out the posts by 50D owners the overwhelming majority are quite happy with them - me included.

Well, do know that Wilt is a long time, well respected member on this forum and is above posting the "XXd hater" threads. I guarantee you that Wilt's intention was genuine, and based purely off factual evidence that he's seeing in the B&S. I assure you that he doesn't have an agenda with this post.

My personal opinion is that Canon released a new camera, then discounted it $300 in 3 months, while Microsoft was offering $200 additional off via Cashback and lots of these cameras were sold. It was a no lose proposition, as people could buy them and sell them later for the same, or even more than they bought them for. If you knew you could try a new camera for 3-4 months at no cost, wouldn't you do it?

Jannie, the focus system on the 50D is much superior to the 5D. The 50D has ALL cross type AF sensors sensitive up to f/5.6 and they are actually quite good. The 30D only has the center AF as a cross type, and all of the outer AF points are sensitive to one direction. I really wished Canon would have put the 50D AF system into the 5D MKII. It's not in the same league as 1D AF, but it's still very good IMO.

Personally, I love my 50D / 5D MKII combo. The flexibility of the two sensor formats is extremely convienent. With a 30D or 50D, and your 5D, you would effectively have the following FOV in your bag

35mm f/1.4
56mm f/1.4
85mm f/1.2
135mm f/2.0
136mm f/1.2
200mm f/2.8
216mm f/2.0
320mm f/2.8

24-70mm f/2.8
38-112mm f/2.8
70-200mm f/2.8
112-320mm f/2.8

BTW, in my experience, the focus on the 50D is much better than the focus on the 30D

Have you noticed a difference in your 50D's focusing compared to your 5DMk2's?

I haven't noticed much of a difference at all between my two cameras. I've had very good luck with my 5DMk2 nailing focus. But I'm one of those center AF shooters, I rarely activate the outer 8 points.

Personally, I feel that my 50D is better, but I have nothing to back that up with. It may be perception, or it may be real, but I feel more "confident" with the 50D on fast moving stuff than I do the 5D MKII.

Ok ...slightly off topic but I've posted on topic and tharmsen has taken the first step....

I found the 5DII I had the chance to use to be just slightly slower to lock on than the 50D. Dare I say it reminded me of my 20D, just timing wise, not anything else. The 40D & 50D seem to have this "zing-beep!" when they lock focus. The mirror blackout was something I had to get used to, it was significant enough that I thought the battery was low.

Because I just bought one 10 days ago and paid too much. Now, since I have mine, the price has dropped $150.

All you 50D buyers can thank me for the new low prices.

I think my 5DMk2 feels more "sluggish" but that's mostly due to the sounds it makes compared to my 50D. The 50D's shutter is quick and relatively quiet. The 5D2's is louder and slower sounding. When it comes to getting that shot though, for whatever reason I feel just a wee bit more comfortable with my 5DMk2. Not sure why. But then when I pick up the 50D I think to myself "I love this camera".

LOL... I'm just glad to have both of them.

Yeah, they're down to $1,331 on Amazon with a kit lens. Not too shabby.

One reason I haven't seen mentioned is the recent Circuit City liquidation. Even if they used it they could still make a tidy profit. Other than that, I would guess they are selling them for the same reasons people sell other models; need cash, upgrading to the 'magical' FF, buyer's remorse or switching to another system.

I also find that many of the vocal people need a pat on the back about their purchase. With all the negativity (unfounded IMO) surrounding the 50D, it wouldn't surprise me that some simply wanted something that garnered high praise from all reviewers and forums. I share my pictures with people who care to look, but I don't mention if I took them with a DSLR, P&S or my phone for that matter. When I play billiards, I don't mention the cues I use either. .02

My inquiry about the 50D resale market was merely prompted by the curiosity why a very respectable camera could be subject to so rapid turnover...a mere 6 months after announcement! The explainations about cash back and other discounts making for cheap cameras certainly is insightful, but I wouldn't think it to be a cause of resale (as opposed to simply allowing buyers to get in at a particularly good price). The point about 'need cash' in these tough economic times and high unemployment at high rate of forecloseures certainly makes today a very different circumstance than over a year ago!

Well another thing to look at is how many people not just here, but at several other sites are saying every day...."I just bought a new 50D" !! Just think how many 50D's as well as other cameras are sold in the US on average everyday even in this economy. There was an article a while back commenting on how DSLR sales had not been hurt much in this current state of the economy.
