It really was a tragedy that could have been a global disaster. There is a piece of film of Soviet firemen clearing radioactive rubble off the roof with shovels, they were wearing leather aprons and had cloth face masks and only stayed on the roof for a couple of mins each. Non of them survived.
Not surprising.
It's not really the radiation that will kill you, per se (though excessive exposure will) but rather the radioactive gasses and dust that you will invariably inhale.
