I just recieved this lens today from Keiv Camera. I am wondering what technique people use to focus it. Do you set it to hyperfocal distance and forget it? or to infinity? I have used the M marking on the distance scale when close to something and it is sharp, but focusing to infinity has been not so sharp. (images to follow)

I read online and found it could be the mount, I did have to file the corners of the mount ears a little to get it to fit correctly to my cameras. I measured the mount and it is roughly 1.5mm thick. If the mount is too thick what mount could you suggest?

Also, the lens did not come with any filters. It does have the screw on filter holder, does this affect focusing?

Any tips/help is appreciated.

relatively close up @f11 focus set to hyperfocal distance, and 100% crop.

From a distance @f11 focus set to infinity and 100% crop. Is this just the nature of the beast? It seems I cannot quite get to infinity.

no need to set the Peleng to infinity. I never do that.

use the DOF markers as a guide, but @ f/11 I tend to set it about 1/3 of the way between the 1meter and 2meter markings and I get infinite focus throughout the frame.

its not possible to use any filters on this lens other than the rear mounted ones. But they are designed for B&W photography... Yellow, Red, etc...

I read somewhere that someone was making custom mounts for the Pelengs for using the lens on a RED camera, and that they were making polarizers and UV's for the lens... but at the price they wanted for the filter set I passed, instead I picked up a second set of filters for mine in the event I might get crazy one day and have a filter or two recut to fit the tiny fittings.

Short answer, no. no filter usage with the Peleng.

I have the filter set, but never use it. It just isn't usable for color photography really. If I ever want to put a yellow cast on an image I'd rather just use PS. If I'm shooting B&W tho, then its a different story, the filters can be used to increase contrast.

The filters look just like the filter you have on your rear element now, that thing screws off and you replace it with one of the 3 filters in the set. If you have a hardmounted EOS-collar on your Peleng you would need to remove it to swap filters. If you have an M42-collar (thats how I roll) you just unscrew the lens from your EOS/M42 adaptor and you can get at the filter a bit easier, but the best access is always had by removing the collar which is a pain.

My Peleng came with four filters. You need to install a filter to get infinity focus as the filter is part of the optical design. I use the clear filter but the UV filter seems to work fine too. The coloured filters are for b&w photography.

Make sure that the filter is screwed on all the way to avoid mirror clearance issues.
