Good to hear! I've been wanting to bring my 1DII in for cleaning and 5D for the mirror fix as a precaution since I, too, do not want it to happen while I am in the field.

To no one in particular:

Walking in the door with a good attitude isn't possible for most folks. The fact that your attitude gets you free service is what's upsetting to most folks. I think everyone can see why some non-local folks find it kind of unfair that someone local gets stuff for free while a non-local spends $50 in shipping then gets a huge repair bill.

Well, at least we don't have to live in California ;)

Actually, I have a question for the OP: Are you a CPS member?

Reason I ask, as I was curious, I just checked the CPS site. Apparently, Silver membership gives you 2 free cleanings and free return shipping. That sounds awfully like what you got.

If the OP is indeed a Silver CPS member, then I think the non-locals can breathe again :)

We might not paid for shipping, but driving is california is like paying for a messanger. :) I only live about 14miles and takes two trips for a total of 60 miles. At 40+ cents a miles. That is about $24 dollars...WITHOUT traffic...:)

Like I said before I have seen and heard people shout and demand this demand that. I am <fill blank> I have CPS, I need to shoot by tomorrow some big shots, this and that...specially when they are paying AFTER agreeing in writting the cost of the repairs.

Me...I just make a humuorous story about my ordeal...like...

me: my exposure is off.
cps: why?
me: I was shooting a black cat last nite...and could not seee him in the frame...
cps: do you have proof..
me: pulls out a pitch black photo...:)
cps: ROFLMAO....

It only took a minute to show them respect and make them forget about the last "big shot".

I also bring ALL of my papers with me and somehow a "proof" of the methods I used to reproduce the issue.

Hi Michael,

I'm not a CPS member nor have I ever been offered to be a member... In true honesty, though, I didn't know they had a membership club... Hmmmmm... I may have to inquire about that the next time I'm down there... Anyhoo...

In addition to Silvex's comments, I actually drove from my area (Pasadena) to Irvine... That's roughly 45 miles one way and about an hour on the road (without the normal Cali traffic)... So my gas consumption (I drive a gas guzzling Nissan Xterra) that morning was pretty high... Enough to qualify for any shipping fee, IMO... Nonetheless, it turned out to be a nice drive back home with my wallet intact...

Sent my 30D & 1D MK2 to NJ and they were returned in less than a week. I did have to pay but was very happy with the service. The only delay is waiting for the inspection and cost. Other than that I was very satisfied. Free shipping overnight as well.

I think some folks are upset because they don't get to schmooze anyone - it's pretty hard to grease the wheels through a letter.
I'd probably be ticked off too if I saw someone get something free that I spent $700 on.
Wouldn't you?????????

You mean return shipping, right?

It's good to hear that you had a good experience. I'm sure Cali's marching orders are the same as New Jersey's.

I hear ya Dan... I'd feel the same if I was on the other side of the fence... In all honesty, I expected to be on that side of the fence when I went to CPS... However, it didn't work out that way... And if you call "schmoozing" being polite and respectful, then I guess I was "schmoozing"... But it could've gone the other way too... They could've written me up for all those services and such... And I wasn't being demanding and/or raising a hoopla about what services needed to be done... The CSR and technicians decided upon themselves to do that... Did I influence them? I don't know... Maybe... Maybe not... Perhaps they had a customer before me who had attitude and yelled his/her lungs out demanding for their camera to be fixed for free... Then I come along and have act completely opposite from that customer... Anyhoo...

But yes, Dan, I would be upset if someone got a freebee where I paid $$$ for it... Moreover, it is pretty hard to "grease the wheels" through a letter... I definately feel you on that one... Peace...

Canon serviced his 1D because the shutter should have lasted longer then 50K, The mirror mod is a free repair to any 5D owner, you just have to ask.
In the case of gear in for Impact damage, this is beyond Canon's control. It is very time consuming to service and do full calibrations on DSLR's with the 1S series being the most time consuming.
Canons Irvine service is top notch, they really do go out of there way to help out as much as possible.

Great story!

Now lets hear some great stories from CPS New Jersey!

dan

Well this is not one of those, "they fixed it for free" stories, but I just made a post about how I drooped my 24-105 and got what I feel was very prompt service from Canon NJ. https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=671200

My 1D Mark II will need a new shutter and I have fewer actuations than that. I have procrastinated on sending it in because for what I shoot the majority of the time it isn't an issue yet and because I don't want to deal with whether they'll cover it for free or not. It's certainly well out of warranty at over 4 years old now.
