How could you make the focus soft? Would a hard drop do it? But, that would be obvious damage.

Besides there's been folks here that have had user induced damage and California has done the work for free if the walk-in is a good schmoozer ;)

True, I'm just stating how Canon might see it.

What do you folks think about this posters experience?

In case you don't want to click the link, it's a 70-200 f/2.8 IS that's 4 months out of warranty that was sent in because the focus is soft. The repair estimate is $180 for a lens that has soft focus issues - not user induced damage.

To me, $180 for a manufacturing mistake that quality control should have caught in the first place seems wrong. Oh, this is the NJ service center. Would it be free if he sent it to California???

dan

I think like he said. It is his fault for not using the lens and waiting until AFTER the warranty expired.

One bump in the right way will cause that. Dropping your bag hard on the floor will do it. A bump in the road making the bag jump up/down might do it. Most pros have their gear recalibrated in a year basis.

That's terribly surprising. I never noticed this with my old film camera lenses, some of which have seen quite a few bumps. But, I wasn't pixel peeping then - this forum has made me crazy

I am sure you printer at 200% and checked every inch of it...:) Plus manual focus is the "cure" for a soft lens...;)

I bought a 1DMK2 on ebay and it had the same white streak shutter problem. After some discussions with the seller, he agreed to pay the cost of any necessary repairs and sent me money as insurance. I drove down to Irvine, told my story and the beautiful young lady said they would fix it for free. I should get the camera tomorrow. After I test it I'm sending the ebay seller his insurance money back. Everyone wins because of Canon Irvine's good customer service.

I'll be sending my 1DMkII in for a new shutter(47k):-(...Hopefully it's cheaper than the 560.00 quoted at a repair shop here in Seattle.

My 1d mk2 N with a count of 29000 or so had to have the shutter replaced. Got the white streak in the pictures.
They gave me a price of $485.00!!!
I called them and complain and they took 20% off the labor.
Total still was $425.

Maybe if you walked the camera into Irvine you get the better service???
